How to change the search string. How to set the default search engine

device, now we will look in detail at how to change the search from Google or Bing from Microsoft. Initially, by default, all devices running Windows Phone 8 are configured with Bing search, which is called up when you press the “Search” touch button.

For Russian-speaking users and some CIS countries, an analogue of the Yandex browser was created, thanks to which this community had and has the opportunity to search for the necessary information on the Internet in a system familiar to itself. But there are people who use this search browser very rarely or have never used it at all, preferring the American search engines Bing or Google. With Google search, everything is quite complicated, since the “benevolent corporation” has still not provided the average user with an adequate, in our understanding, search application that will support the “Start” button. As for the Bing service, things are much better here, because the functionality and appearance of this PS is head and shoulders above the previous search engine.

And so, option one: you can leave the previous functionality of the Search button, use services from Yandex for certain purposes, and personally select (select) Google search engine for yourself, installing corresponding application from the Market and running it as a separate program. You can also set the default search engine from Google in the settings of the “stock” Internet Explorer browser. After this setting, when you load IE, you will have the Google Search start page.

Let's consider option number two: We set the settings in the system to use the Bing search application. To do this, you need to go to the system settings, then go to the “Language + Region” settings tab, find the search and browser language line, and specify “English (USA)”. The result will be the following, while in your smartphone the language settings of the system, country, region and time format will be in Russian, and the search, with all the advantages and functionality, will be from Bing. This search is very good at finding Russian-language queries, a given route, translating photos on the fly, or simply and quickly helping you find the nearest cafeteria. There is no doubt that Bing is much more complete than the Yandex PS, to which, in any case, you need to install additional applications to obtain approximate functionality as in the American PS, and at the same time, do not forget, each individual Yandex application for certain purposes must be launched separately. The quality of implementation, functionality and progressive direction are still left to the Bing search engine.

Once again, let's take a closer look at the search settings on Windows Phone:

  • Search from GOOGLE: Settings -> Internet Explorer -> additional settings -> select the default search engine -> Google. Very convenient and also simple. The search will be opened through the Internet Explorer browser, or when searching through the address input line, it will also use Google Search.
  • Search from YANDEX: Settings-> Internet Explorer -> additional settings -> select the default search engine -> Yandex. Important: the system language should be Russian by default. If not, set it up: Settings -> language + region -> Browser and search language -> select “Russian (Russia)”.
  • Search from BING: Settings -> language + region -> Browser and search language -> select “English (USA)”. Probably the most pleasant and convenient thing to use is that this search will be called up when you press the touch (physical) SEARCH button on the front panel of the smartphone.

You can enter search queries directly into the address bar (omnibox). The default search engine is Google, but you can choose another if you wish.

How to set the default search engine

How to add, change or remove a search engine

How to fill in the fields

Enter the URL of the search results page. Replace your search term with the character combination %s .

Here's how to determine the search results page URL:

  1. Go to the page of the desired search engine.
  2. Enter any request.
  3. Copy and paste the web address of the search results page into the "Link with %s parameter instead of query" field. Please note that this address is different from the website URL.
    • For example, for the query “football” the URL of the search result will be: https://www.google.ru/search?q=football.
  4. Replace the search term in the URL with %s .
    • In this case, the search engine URL will look like this: http://www.google.com/search?q=%s.

Use a Chromebook at work or school? If the search engine is selected by the network administrator, you will not be able to change it. More details

Opera recently released the next version of its browser, which received an updated interface and even integration with popular instant messengers. However, the Norwegians categorically do not want to add some simple features to the program. One of these is the ability to change Yandex search to Google in the express panel.

In classic Opera, which worked on the Presto engine, there was such an option, but in modern web browsers it has been missing since its inception. You will not find the corresponding parameter in the main browser settings or even in the opera:flags service page.

Change Yandex search to Google (Windows 7/8/10)

However, it is still possible to change the search (remove Yandex from Opera), and quite easily. Just before we continue, we must warn:

Attention: the procedure at the time of writing only works in one direction. That is, you can change Yandex to Google, but you will not be able to return Yandex specifically to the search field in the express panel using the same method. Google will be there forever.

Another important point is that you should first close Opera so that the browser does not work even in the background.

Otherwise, all changes made will simply be reset and when you start, instead of “Google” you will again see the same Yandex.

To change the search, you need to slightly edit one of the Opera service files.

1. Open any Windows Explorer window and copy the path C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable into its address bar.

2. Erase the word “user” and write your nickname in the system instead. You can view it at the top of the Start menu or, for example, here:

3. When the address is generated press Enter:

4. In the folder that opens, find the “Local State” file:

5. Open it through a text editor, such as Notepad:

6. Using the built-in search (called via Ctrl+F), find the word “country” there:

7. Replace the “ru” to the right of it with “us” or “en”. Do the same to the right of "country_from_server". In the end it should look like this:

8. Save your changes. Done: the next time you launch the browser, you will be greeted with a Google search in the express panel (search suggestions, if anything, also work).

By the way, if you encounter various problems when playing videos, then perhaps the reason is – to which we recently devoted an article.

Change Yandex search to Google (Windows XP)

If you use Windows XP, then let us remind you that the latest version of Opera for this system is 36.

Opera updates for XP were stopped last year.

However, you can change Yandex to Google here almost exactly the same as in Windows 7/8/10 with more modern versions of Opera.

The only difference is the file path for item #1 above. In XP the path will look like: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Opera Software\Opera Stable. Instead of “USER” you must put your nickname in the system:

Make the above changes, replacing “ru” with “en” in two places. Save the result. And when you start, Google will be waiting for you.

We repeat: it will not be possible to return Yandex using the same method. So before editing Local State, think about whether you are ready to say goodbye to the domestic search engine on the express panel.

Remove Yandex from Opera express panel

Finally, one more small detail. Many simply do not need any search at all in the express panel, because they can easily search directly from the address bar of the browser.

Therefore, instead of changing Yandex to Google, you can completely remove the search field from the express panel.

To do this, click on the icon in its upper right corner and, among the options on the side, uncheck the box next to “search field”. As a result, there will be more space for site cells.

The use of search engines has become part of everyday human activity. You get used to a certain information search service like your favorite tea.

Many users change the browser installed in their operating system to a faster one, but the search engine used does not always suit them. In this article we will tell you how to change the default search engine in Opera to your favorite one.

Search in Opera

  • Home page. For the Russian-language segment of the Internet, the search engine indicated is Yandex;
  • Address bar. All modern browsers support processing the search query entered into it. The default here is Google;
  • A special search box next to the address bar. It also uses Google.

Let's figure out the settings and install a unified search system.

For Yandex fans

Let's install the Yandex service as the main information search tool. In the main Opera window, a fragment of which is visible in the screenshot, in the upper right corner, you see three horizontal lines. This icon hides the home page settings.

We are interested in the bottom part of this tab, which allows you to edit browser settings.

In the page that opens, select “Browser” and find the area responsible for managing search engines. By clicking the button of the same name, you will open a selection window in which Yandex is located in second place.

Select “Set as default”. We exit the settings, returning to the home page.

The result of the actions taken is clearly visible in the screenshot. The search engine in Opera in all areas has been changed to Yandex.

Google fans

Not everyone likes Yandex, so to change it to Google we’ll go to the settings again. In this case, our task will be to remove the Yandex search area from the home page. As you remember, in other places Google is installed by default. When you get to the general settings, pay attention to the lower left corner.

Check the "Show advanced settings" box. At the same time, check which search engine is set for the address bar. In case you used the first part of our recommendations and changed it to Yandex. Let's go back to the settings of the initial page.

After our manipulations, additional parameters appeared on it. We uncheck the “Search field” item and get rid of Yandex. The Start page now displays only sites that you select for frequent use.

As you can see in the screenshot, the additional search area has been removed, and Google is used as the main tool for obtaining information on the Internet.

For exotic lovers

Let's pay attention to users who are not satisfied with both search engines. There are two options that you can use in this case. Firstly, you can use search sites that are additionally preinstalled in the browser:

  • Rambler;
  • DuckDuckGo;

The actions, in this case, will be a combination of those described in the two previous sections. We remove the Yandex line from the initial page, and in the settings we change Google to the search engine of your choice.

Secondly, you can set your own settings to use the search engine that suits you. For example, let's look at creating our own query in Yahoo. Open the main page of the site.

You need to enter some noticeable word into the request form, let it be “diamond”. We will need it at the next stage of our actions. Let's give Yahoo the opportunity to process the request and then completely copy the entire contents of the browser's address bar.

Go to the search engine settings and select “Create”

Let's prepare our own query system for the Yahoo search engine. We write down the name and key that we will use in the future to enable it. Paste everything you copied from the address bar into the “Address” field. We are looking for the word we entered for processing in this mixture of characters.

Carefully replace “diamond” with the characters “%s”, without quotes. Your template is ready. Now you can use it to search for information. For example, let’s find data for the query “corundum”. In the address bar, enter “I am corundum.”

The result can be seen in the screenshot. Using the “I” key we set, Yahoo is turned on, as can be seen from the icon that appears in the address field. The result of such a request, regardless of which search engine is set by default, will be processed on the selected site.

You can do a similar operation with any page you select. You can use any convenient word as a key.

Removing an extra field

Finally, let’s get rid of the extra field that we have behind the address bar. This is an amateur setting; some people like to enter queries directly into the address space, while others like to enter them in a separate field.

Again, go to the settings and enable additional fields there, as we did when removing the Yandex line. In the “Browser” section, go down to the “User Interface” group.

The enabled additional settings are highlighted in Opera with gray dots, making them easy to highlight and distinguish from the standard ones. Remove the check mark from the bottom line, which can be seen in the above screenshot.

Now, after all your manipulations with the settings, to request information on the Internet, you only have the address line itself.

Finally

We took a tour of the settings of the Opera browser and looked at how to change the search engine specified in it to any one you like or how to create your own. We will assume that now you will not have any problems solving this problem, and you will find any information in a matter of seconds. Happy searching!
