Apple tv 4 what's new. Why you should buy a fourth-generation Apple TV

As promised on Friday, we are telling you about 4 with all the details. Why is there an Apple A8 media console inside, is it convenient to play using the new remote control, why was the optical audio output removed and how to live now, is the new product from Cupertino worth the money and how to win the fourth generation Apple TV from the site and - you will find all this in our review.

So, fourth generation Apple TV. Once small pet project company, which was intended for very active fans of the Apple ecosystem, has now become an independent “combat unit”. To do this, the Cupertino company had to reconsider its vision of home consumption of multimedia content.

Apple TV (for simplicity, let’s remove all these “fourth generation”, “The New” and similar epithets, which in our case do not carry any meaning) comes in a slightly larger package than before, since due to the increased hardware content of the device, we had to think about powering the device and cooling the Apple A8 processor, two gigabytes random access memory and a dozen more pieces of silicon with long indices. All this led to the fact that the console became, although not significantly, noticeably thicker.

Also, Apple TV now comes with one more cable: the new Remote with a touch surface and a microphone for communicating with Siri no longer requires changing batteries; it can be used (although we don’t know yet how often it’s needed) Charge using a cable with a Lightning plug. If the cable that came with your favorite iPhone has begun to deteriorate, it’s time to get an Apple TV!

Actually, you won’t be able to find anything else interesting in the box, so all that remains is to simply connect the Apple TV to the TV, carry out the initial setup and start using it. The company refused only optical audio output. The reasons for this action remain unknown to most consumers, so if your receiver is capable of receiving sound only via optics, go ahead to online stores in search of splitters that can provide the new product with the necessary connectors.

Let’s say right away that the app store for tvOS in its American incarnation looks more interesting at the moment: programmers from overseas have already adapted great amount applications, including streaming video services, so residents of the North American United States will definitely not be left without their favorite Netflix, Hulu or Spanish-language cooking shows.

Just as they won’t be left without Siri. Yes, the voice assistant is available on Apple TV only to US account holders. True, while Siri on the set-top box is still in beta testing and can’t do much, it can provide information about baseball players and American football matches regularly. She also periodically considers herself the king of the whole world. Siri did not make such confessions on camera, but she quietly managed to capture this strange and highly controversial thesis.

When switching to your native Russian account, the number of applications in App Store decreases dramatically. Alas, at the time of writing this text and filming the review, our dear application developers did not bother creating applications for the same, for example, TV channels, although “creation” is a rather loud word, since there is no need to write an application from scratch, only some adaptation is necessary. But what we have, we have.

One thing is good: Apple TV has become a truly popular product, and if users are not given these same Hulu and Netflix, they will put a NAS at home, install Plex and will enjoy the full streaming of content obtained in the open spaces global network. Fortunately, if you believe the reports of foreign journalists and domestic users, everything works perfectly and does not cause any problems in operation.

The Cupertino company itself also thought about users. Now you can connect to Apple TV via Bluetooth wireless acoustics: do you want a cozy listening to music on some, for example, JBL Charge 2? Easily! Connect a wireless headset to sit in front of the TV, watch a movie rented from iTunes and not disturb your household? Easily! But what I definitely won’t thank Apple for is that the keyboard (also, by the way, from Apple) I couldn't connect even one. And this is subject to availability complex passwords in several accounts quite inconvenient.

Yes, the touch panel on the new control panel allows you to use O It is more convenient to use search in YouTube and similar services than was previously possible with the old remote control, but when you want to use all the capabilities of such a device, you would not want to run into such artificial restrictions.

You will also encounter restrictions in games. For now - only for the size of the application. We did not analyze the traffic that Apple TV generates, but it would be reasonable to assume that heavy games with graphics reserves that can burn up the hardware of the new product will actively use the network connection - applications take up very little space in the console memory, up to 200 megabytes, so what if you buy now a modification of the set-top box with a storage capacity of 64 gigabytes, then, as they say, “for growth”.

However, playing on Apple TV is a completely new experience for fans of the console. Yes, at the moment things have not progressed beyond arcade races, quests and the like, but this is most likely due to the development studios refining applications. There are not so many truly suitable MFi standard controllers, but control under them should be noticeably different from control using the new Remote (endowed with gyroscopes and, as a result, the skills of the same Wii Remote, for example). The user expects to get a new experience and not giving him this opportunity means turning the Apple TV into a rather incomprehensible arcade terminal. But iPhone and iPad users have access to something new...

But still new Siri Remote is a lifesaver in games. No, the touch panel has not yet been given the lion's share of tasks, but the gyroscopes are working hard in racing. Again, there is a sad point here: if in Asphalt 8 you need to hold the remote control with your head to the left, then in other less famous races you need to hold it to the right. The tasks assigned to the keys of the control panel change, and it may not be possible to play everything right away: before starting a particular game, the user is faced with rather boring instructions telling about the correct way to hold the remote control, rotate it in space, press buttons and touchpad etc.

Most likely, you just need to unload your brain for a week or two in the evenings after work by sitting on the couch with this remote control, and not the usual smartphone, and then you can definitely say about the suitability of this remote control for, albeit arcade, active gaming. Well, or get something like a gamepad from Mad Catz; we have already talked about their gaming accessories more than once. All gamepads in a row will not work, and this poses a certain financial barrier. Buy an Apple TV, buy a gamepad, buy headphones to follow everything with complete immersion... Wait for the games, again. But it’s okay, it’s not that difficult.

Standard operation of this generation of Apple TV is not much different from previous ones. We have a media library - cinema, music, radio stations. There is access to our photo library via iCloud. It would be strange to expect more: the Cupertino company did not introduce new media services that would completely change the perception of set-top boxes. The main thing is that nothing was removed. But we should also be happy about such things.

AirPlay on Apple TV works. The opposite would be strange. Streaming works great with iPhone and there are no complaints. With Mac OS standard means also failed to cause any artifacts. Most of all, it was interesting to look at the popular Beamer application, which successfully deals with broadcasting all kinds of video files of various formats. What can we say? It works, including using very strange schemes for transferring a heavy mkv file through several transfer points over a local network.

The new remote control, by the way, is trained to be friendly with “regular” TVs - you won’t have to reach for the remote control from the video panel to adjust the playback volume during AirPlay broadcast if your TV is not trained to control via HDMI. Just “transmit” commands from your TV remote control to Apple TV once and forget about the pile of different remote controls you have to surround yourself with. It sounds somewhat confusing, but in practice, and with built-in instructions, it will be easy to understand this matter.

Is it worth replacing the previous generation Apple TV with a new one? For fans - yes, definitely worth it. “For growth” - yes, the new generation of this addition to the TV has a long and successful path ahead, we believe, on which all the capabilities of the console will be revealed and all the juices of the hardware will be squeezed out, as happened before. Is it worth upgrading just to have it? Here, perhaps, everything is not so clear. The old, classic capabilities of Apple TV remain available, but if the more compact flat box of the third iteration under the TV is already pleasing to the eye and warms the soul, just wait until the content stops crawling through the eye of the needle of the hardware filling. And also go to the store.

But here’s what you should definitely do: take part in the drawing by filling out the basic Google form below. No complications, no unnecessary movements. And you (yes, yes, exactly you, reading these letters) You can become the owner of your own copy of Apple TV 4. We will sum up the results of the drawing on November 9!

We thank the UP-House.ru store for providing the device for a comprehensive study. Well, if you decide to get a brand new Apple TV, don’t forget to inform us that you are our reader when ordering from UP-House and receive a discount. Well, we will continue to study this device- too much remains uncovered, too much for us (and you) remains to be seen.

Along with mobile devices(iPhone and Apple Watch) Apple updated its Apple media player TV. The set-top box was called Apple TV 4K, and from this its main innovation is clear: support for 4K video. We decided to take a closer look at how this works in practice.

IN Apple history TV is the fourth update (respectively, the fifth generation), and compared to the one that was released two years ago and gave users the ability to install applications, and therefore significantly expanded the functionality of the device, the changes in Apple TV 4K are not so great and are associated with the ability to view 4K . But, as it turns out, there are many more nuances here than might seem at first glance.

Equipment

The Apple TV 4K box and its contents are not much different from the previous (fourth) generation model.

Inside we see the device itself, network cable, user manuals, branded remote control and Lightning cable.

The Lightning cable is needed to charge the remote control and nothing else (although, of course, if you use any Apple mobile devices, it will be quite useful).

But what is missing, as before, is an HDMI cable. Moreover, in the case of Apple TV 4K, users need to be especially careful when choosing it, since an inappropriate cable (with an HDMI standard version older than 1.4) simply will not allow transmitting 4K video. On the other hand, if you have a 4K TV (and if you don't, why would you need an Apple TV 4K?), then you most likely have a compatible cable.

Design

The appearance of the console has remained virtually unchanged compared to the previous generation. It's still a hefty, thick black block with rounded edges and a rubberized bottom that has slots for active cooling.

There is no particular difference in materials: as before, plastic is used for the main part of the body.

And here is the second key difference: Ethernet is now gigabit. Which, in general, is logical: for streaming 4K video, a 100-megabit Internet may not be enough.

As before, all connectors are located on the back of the device, and there is an operation indicator on the front.

The appearance of the remote control as a whole also remains the same, except that a white border has appeared around the Menu button - for easier visual (for example, in the dark) and tactile detection. Well, the surface of the other buttons has changed a little: before they were slightly concave, but now they are flat.

So, the design of the set-top box and remote control remained virtually unchanged, with the exception of the disappearance USB-C port(but it wasn’t particularly needed before) and the advent of gigabit Ethernet.

Setup and connection

To fully use Apple TV 4K, you need a 4K-capable TV and a high-speed HDMI cable (standard 1.4).

If everything is connected correctly, there will be an image, and in the Settings → Video and Audio section you will see “4K HDR” next to the word Format. Going there, we will see 4K HDR 60 Hz. You can also look at the color. At this point we were 4:2:0.

In addition to connecting to a TV set-top box, you can also “make friends” with iOS devices and Mac computers. The first is needed in order to use a smartphone or tablet as a remote control, and the second is needed to take screenshots.

Connecting to an iOS device is quite simple: select the appropriate item in the settings, bring your smartphone or tablet to the Apple TV, enter a four-digit code - and you're done. With a computer it’s more difficult.

To connect your Mac to Apple TV and take screenshots, you need to install the Xcode development kit on your computer running High Sierra, then connect your Mac to the same Wi-Fi networks, in which Apple TV, open the Window / Devices and Simulators tab in Xcode, select among the available Apple TV devices and click Pair.

After connecting, we will see the Take Screenshot button (it is used to take screenshots) and information about Apple TV. As you can see, the model we tested has an actual storage capacity of 57.36 GB.

But let's get back to taking screenshots, since this is a key tool for testing 4K. The resulting screenshot is saved in its original resolution on the computer desktop. And it will be a visual representation of what we will actually see on the TV screen when using Apple TV. Note that all screenshots, without exception - regardless of the type of content being played - had a resolution of 3840x2160, that is, 4K. In particular, the entire tvOS interface is rendered in 4K.

But this in itself does not mean that the video content is truly displayed in 4K. We decided to look into this.

4K viewing

As we already noted in the introduction to the article, the functionality of the Apple TV 4K is similar to the previous generation, with the exception of 4K support. We talked in detail about the fourth generation Apple TV in, so we recommend that you familiarize yourself with it. We will not repeat ourselves here and will focus on the issue related specifically to 4K support. What types of content is it available on? How accessible is 4K content with normal use of Apple TV?

First of all, let's describe the methodology we used. In addition to trying to simply determine the quality of the picture by eye, we decided to display different ways to 40-inch Samsung TV UE40KU6000 connected with a high-speed HDMI cable to an Apple TV 4K, special 4K test videos containing areas with pixel-by-pixel alternating black and white lines. Such videos can be found on YouTube (for example,), we also have them - encoded with H.264 and H.265 codecs (download and respectively).

Next, after the picture was displayed on the TV screen via Apple TV 4K in one of the ways (there are several of them, and we will talk about this in detail), we took a screenshot by pressing pause or right while the video was playing (given that it is static , no difference).

To begin with, we tried to launch one of the videos on YouTube. However, the screenshot showed that the resolution is HD, not 4K.

By clicking on the screenshot, you can see the original image. So, although the image itself has a resolution of 3840x2160, the 1-pixel thick circles are solid gray. Whereas if the picture were truly 4K, then black and white stripes would be visible in them, like in circles 2 pixels thick.

We click on Info and see that our suspicions were justified: the HD icon next to the video duration indicates that it is indeed not 4K, otherwise the icon would indicate 4K.

As an experiment, we tried to play the same video on a TV through its own YouTube application, that is, without Apple TV. And there the video stream was 4K, which could be understood both by the circles with visible stripes and by the Info. Therefore, the problem is with the YouTube app for tvOS. IN Apple We have been confirmed that the YouTube app for tvOS does not yet support 4K resolution.

At the same time, 4K films are about the same price as HD ones. The only problem is finding them, because many very notable and very recent blockbusters are currently only available in HD. Take Alien: Covenant, for example. It would seem that the film is large, and the price is rather high (399 rubles), but - only HD.

And, for example, “Mad Max: Road Fury” - in 4K and at a lower price (349 rubles). Why is that? Unclear.

We decided to try to buy and reproduce Mad Max. And everything would be fine, and it seems that even the picture there is quite 4K (although it’s impossible to say for sure), but it was not possible to confirm this with a screenshot: when playing movies from the iTunes Store, taking screenshots is blocked - you’ll just get a black screen.

The situation is similar with Netflix, where, however, the selection of 4K content is wider. However, there we encountered another problem: in a number of series, even if UltraHD 4K is specified, the apparent picture quality is clearly lower. That is, hypothetically, the video stream could indeed be 4K, but, as you understand, you can even convert VHS to 4K, but you will not experience the delight of the clarity and saturation of the image. We watched one episode of Mindhunter and saw that the image there was very imperfect. Alas, we cannot confirm this with a screenshot for the same reasons as in the case of iTunes.

It is obvious that video services will gradually place more emphasis on 4K content and at the same time will begin to monitor quality more closely, but for now we have to admit that the 4K sign itself does not mean anything.

And we return to our attempts to display a 4K test video on a TV screen via Apple TV. And we try one more way: using the Plex application. In an article about the past Apple generation TV, we talked about several applications that allow you to play custom videos on Apple TV. The essence of the work is the same everywhere: video from a computer is uploaded to the cloud, from where it is taken by the application on Apple TV and played (since it is its own file manager and there is no option to download files to Apple TV).

One of the most successful options is Plex. We tried loading two versions of the test video into it, playing it through Apple TV and taking a screenshot. And this is what happened. First up is a 4K H.264 file.

The image quality is not bad (although you can notice small artifacts), but the main thing is that it’s still not 4K. The gray squares along the edges of the central block should be represented by black and white lines one pixel thick. Now look at the 4K H.265 file.

And here an extremely unpleasant surprise awaits us. I think there is no need to even comment on anything - everything is clear without words. Thus, Plex does not work correctly with the most promising 4K video format and cannot yet play 4K video in its original quality.

It is possible that you can find an application that is more optimized for these tasks. But you need to look for them, and not expect that everything will work by default.

The most impatient readers have probably been wanting to exclaim for a long time: “So you still managed to reproduce 4K so that it was truly full-fledged 4K?” And so as not to bore them any longer with descriptions of attempts of varying degrees of success, let’s say: yes, it was possible. And surprisingly in a simple way: Via AirPlay when playing videos in the browser on iPhone.

Simply put, we opened the link to the H.264 and H.265 videos, then clicked on the icon that sent playback to the Apple TV, and then took a screenshot from the Apple TV. The result is the image you see above this paragraph. This is exactly how it should be ideally.

Of course, you can also see 4K in some video applications that specifically collect beautiful videos in this resolution. For example, Sunlapse 4K is views of the sun. You can watch and meditate, or you can use it as a background screensaver. It is obvious that there will be more and more such applications.

There are also various collections of documentaries and videos focused on 4K content - usually dedicated to nature. For example, Love Nature.

But the question still arises of how the original quality of the content corresponds to 4K, that is, whether there is initially appropriate picture quality. Here, for example, are screenshots of one video from Love Nature (video from the UltraHD 4K section). If you don’t enlarge it, it seems to look great, but when you enlarge it to the original size, it’s not so happy.

Gaming applications evoke similar emotions. It is clear that no one will redraw them specifically for 4K, and this is hardly possible, but in the end it turns out that the same Asphalt 8 looks no better in 4K than in HD. And if you take a screenshot and view it in its original size, the impression will be completely depressing.

conclusions

Before we give our verdict on the Apple TV 4K, let's go back 10 years. Then, in 2007, Full HD video had just become widespread. In particular, there was complete confusion with disc formats: the war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD was in full swing. The first players, which had just entered the Russian market, seemed slow, noisy and glitchy, there were very few disks (and their prices were prohibitive), and alternative ways getting Full HD video was not so much. DVD seemed to be the de facto standard, and all these experiments with HD and Full HD were the lot of enthusiasts.

Today, the situation with 4K penetration is similar, but in some ways progress is faster: at least today, millions of smartphone users can already shoot 4K video themselves. And finding 4K content on the Internet is not so difficult, although, of course, not everything is available in this resolution. But there are also plenty of problems: first of all, not all companies whose products are in one way or another related to video content are ready to switch to 4K. These are the creators of films/series/videos themselves, application developers, and equipment manufacturers.

The second problem is the painful search for common formats and standards. Some support H.264, others support H.265, and this is just one example. This situation is inevitable, and it will be so for the near future, until 4K begins to gradually become dominant, and the entire industry begins to focus on it first.

Actually, new console Apple TV 4K just demonstrates the heap of problems that exist with 4K. Someone “forgot” to add support, someone added it “for show” without doing any optimization, someone transferred content that was only suitable for HD to 4K, and so on. It turns out that having bought an Apple TV 4K, we can’t just go and enjoy the flawless image in super high resolution. We still need to find that “honest” 4K and manage to reproduce it.

And today the best way to do this is to simply broadcast video from a smartphone or tablet. We post the video on some cloud service, stream it via AirPlay to Apple TV 4K and enjoy. Another option is to buy films with a 4K icon on iTunes, but the choice here is still small, and most films (even relatively recent and big-budget ones) are presented only in Full HD. At the same time, there is no doubt that the list of 4K releases will expand - after all, Apple is directly interested in this.

As for tvOS applications, there is still a complete lottery with 4K support.

And yet it should be noted: the appearance of Apple TV 4K - important point for the entire industry. The focus on the HEVC (H.265) format in macOS High Sierra and iOS 11 is a signal to everyone: guys, it's time! The future has arrived! And we can hope that after some time (most likely, a year and a half), 4K will really become the basic option, and those who buy an Apple TV 4K today will no longer have to think about where to get a real 4K image.

Apple TV 4K—You can now watch movies and TV shows in 4K HDR. There are already a lot of them in iTunes and other popular applications. It's time to change the way you think about television.

4K HDR. Sets a new standard.

An ordinary TV can be endowed with “mind” different ways- pre-installed OS, “dongles” that are inserted into the HDMI port of the TV, and set-top boxes. And if operating system If the manufacturer chooses it, and dongles require painstaking setup, then the best option for your TV may be a set-top box.

TV set-top boxes have impressive functionality and, thanks to their small box form factor, can have good hardware. Among the consoles there are also representatives on “naked” Android with “ Play Store” and so on, but much more interesting are set-top boxes with their “own” operating system.

It is worth understanding that most of them run on the same Android, but modified for the specific purposes of smart TV, with the exception of Apple TV. Gazeta decided to compare the two most prominent representatives of this segment - Apple TV 4 and Moyo TV.

Moyo TV

MOYO is, first of all, a service that combines many other services such as online cinemas and regular TV channels. It works only through the proprietary Moyo Box, which costs 5,000 rubles. In terms of design, it is an ordinary black box with a glossy lid. The case contains an HDMI port, optical and analog audio outputs, as well as a USB input. It comes with a simple remote control and an HDMI cable.

The main screen is presented with cards with recommendations, which the service automatically selects depending on your browsing history and preferences. Among these cards are films, the latest news releases, match recordings and in general everything that the algorithm has considered interesting to a particular user. But the set-top box “understands” preferences only after some time of use, and until that moment you will have to manually search desired channel, show and movie.

As for TV channels, with the help of Moyo you can watch not only live broadcasts, but also recordings of programs up to three days ago.

In the “Movies” and “Series” sections it is quite difficult to find something more or less relevant and interesting. The “Applications” section deserves special attention, where there are Russian online cinemas ivi.ru, Megogo, as well as “Amediateka”. It is precisely the presence of Amediateka that saves the situation.

Usage is marred by frequent lags and delays after pressing a button.

Moyo works on a subscription system, but you can start using the set-top box right out of the box, since the first 30 days of viewing all content are free. Next, you will need to select a subscription type, there is also a free one. It gives access to 30 TV channels and a catalog of films and shows from various channels. There is also a subscription with 100 TV channels and two channels Amedia Premium and Hit for 550 rubles. per month. Subscription for 790 rub. adds access to Amediateka.

Apple TV 4

The fourth generation of Apple's console has received many more features than its predecessors. Until now, Apple TV could simply play movies and music from iTunes and had support for several other services, most of which are not available in Russia.

Externally, the set-top box is practically no different from the third generation, except that it is as tall as two Apple TV 3Gs. The increase in size is due to improved hardware, which is comparable to the iPhone 6. Such power is needed to run applications from the App Store. It is the presence third party applications from the App Store made it possible to expand the scope of application of Apple's set-top box.

The control panel has a built-in microphone and touch panel, as well as an accelerometer and gyroscope. You can recharge it using Lightning. TO touch control Instead of a push-button one, it’s difficult to get used to; you experience particular difficulties while typing.

In terms of working with the digital multimedia library of films and videos, nothing has changed significantly. In addition to purchasing iTunes movies, you can rent them for much less money. In addition, remote playback of video and music from iOS devices via AirPlay is supported. The audio player supports the Apple Music service.

On the tvOS main screen, at the very top there are previews of the main row of applications: in the case of “Movies” and “Music” this is the top, App Store - recommended applications. Below are all the other programs. By long pressing on the icon, you can move it to the same main row and swap places with other applications.

First of all, these are applications related to video content - Periscope, Netflix, Amediateka and others. Among the games, the leaders are mainly simple arcade projects.

Apple TV is sold in two versions, with 32 and 64 GB of storage, at prices of 14,000 and 18,000 rubles. For a seemingly ordinary TV set-top box, the price is high, and it’s hard to disagree with this. But since the previous generation of the console is available for sale for much less money and there is no need for the App Store, this is quite a good option.

Apple TV and Moyo are very different from each other. Perhaps the only thing they have in common is that they are TV set-top boxes. In all other respects this different devices for different needs.

Apple TV is perfect for those who love movies and TV series, as well as spend time playing games and applications in front of the TV. It is also practically a must-have device for iOS device owners.

Moyo TV, in turn, is for fans of television as such, with news releases, shows and matches.

At the same time, the fourth generation Apple TV differs from the third in its support for third-party applications and everything that follows from this. That is, for regular viewing of movies and playing videos from an iOS device, Apple TV 3G, which is significantly cheaper, will be sufficient.
