Microsoft Edge won't launch. Problems with Microsoft Edge? Here's how to reinstall it Edge windows 10 browser won't launch

The Internet Explorer browser ruined Microsoft's reputation for a long time. It had a terrible interface, was slow, and allowed third-party developers to install various extensions, which were often malicious. However, millions of people used this browser because it was installed on Windows by default.

Starting with Windows 10, Microsoft ditched Internet Explorer in favor of the all-new Microsoft Edge browser. And it’s really good: a new engine, integration with the Cortana voice assistant, a simple and intuitive interface. Every Windows 10 user should definitely give this browser a chance rather than rushing to install Google Chrome.

But Microsoft wouldn't be Microsoft if everything in Windows worked perfectly. Some users are faced with the fact that the Microsoft Edge browser simply does not start or closes immediately with an error. This problem can be solved in the following way.

First, you need to create a restore point so that if problems arise, you can always roll back to the original state of the system. To do this, open File Explorer, right-click on “This PC”, select “Properties” > “System Protection”. Go to the tab of the same name. Enable the recovery option for the disks; if they are disabled, click on the Create a restore point button.

Once the restore point has been created, you can proceed to change the Microsoft Edge browser settings. Open File Explorer and copy the following path into the address bar: C:\Users\%User %\Desktop\2017-01-27 15_52_15-Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe, where instead of %User% you must specify the user name. In my case it is Sergey. You will see the following folder in front of you.

Delete all data in it. This action will completely delete Microsoft Edge browser data from Windows, therefore, all bookmarks, saved pages and other information will be lost.

The next step is to search for the Windows PowerShell application and run it as an administrator.

Enter the command: Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach (Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml" -Verbose)

After this, the system will inform you that the default browser you are using has been reset. Try launching the Microsoft Edge browser. You should be greeted with the initial browser setup window.

Any new products in the world of digital technology have some flaws, and if we are talking about such complex software as an operating system, then one cannot do without the difficulties that arise in it. The new Microsoft Windows 10 includes the Edge browser, which is also a new product in its segment. Microsoft has announced that Edge will replace Explorer. Indeed, the browser is very functional and fast, but users often have problems launching it.

Microsoft Edge will replace Internet Explorer

The main reason for instability is in youth. There are many errors in the browser code that interfere with normal operation, so sometimes Microsoft Edge does not start, because even old programs are not without flaws; sometimes certain errors appear in their performance. But Edge has only just announced itself, and the creators of Windows 10 did not have the opportunity to prevent some deviations in its functioning.

However, the launch problem is completely solvable, and users can get things working on their own, without involving specialists. Here are a few tricks that improve the performance of Edge, allowing it to launch faster. But our advice is primarily aimed at experienced users. If you are new to working with programs, Microsoft Edge does not launch in Windows 10, and you decide to fix the situation yourself without turning to specialists, then create a restore point first so as not to lose all your data in Windows 10 and the browser completely.

Sometimes Microsoft Edge does not work in Windows 10 if a lot of garbage has accumulated during operation, which greatly delays the launch of the program. Garbage can be outdated information stored in different places:

  • log of visited pages;
  • cookie;
  • download history;
  • cache of pages downloaded while browsing the Internet;
  • a list of web addresses you enter.

There are two ways to clear debris.

Cleaning in the browser itself

Open Edge, click on the button at the top right - “Advanced”. Select “Options” there, a window will open in which you will find the words “Clear browsing data” and under it a button that allows you to select what exactly to clear on your computer. Check the box next to all cleaning items except “Form Data” and “Passwords”. Click on "Clear". After deletion, browser performance will return.

External cleaning

If the browser does not start or is unstable, you can clean it using the CCleaner utility. A software product from Piriform Ltd will help remove debris. After activating the utility, you will immediately be taken to a window in which you can select what exactly will be cleaned. Here you can immediately clean other browsers you use. If the browser still works intermittently, then you need to completely update it. How to do this, read below.

Create a new account

If clearing garbage does not solve the loading problem, try another method that restores full functionality of the browser. You need to create a new account, then Edge will remain the same, but its settings will be completely reset. You will receive a completely clean browser, the same as it was when you first installed it with Windows 10. To do this, follow the step-by-step instructions.

  • Go to “Options” (under the “Advanced” button in the top right corner).
  • Find the “Account Settings” link there and open the settings window through it.
  • Next, click on “Family and other users”, then “Add user”.
  • To avoid having to reinvent your email and phone number, click “I don’t have this person’s login information.”
  • Skip the offers to create an account online.
  • Select "Add a user without a Microsoft account".
  • A window will open, enter the required information for the user.

You have created another user, the browser on his record will be completely updated, without all kinds of information that is in your history and without settings. The performance of the browser will be accelerated, since nothing interferes with its loading.

PowerShell Console

The third way to get Edge working is through the PowerShell console. For example, when creating an online account for a new user, the problem with the browser will be solved just as effectively as in the method described above, but all system settings will remain on your first account, and to reinstall the browser you will need a console from it.

  • To launch the console in Windows 10 as an administrator, call the search engine by pressing WIN+Q.
  • Type in the search data line.
  • Right-click on the search result and in the menu that appears after that, activate run as administrator.
  • In the console, enter the command “cd C:\Users\username”.

When the command is typed, Edge will be reinstalled, therefore, it will start quickly, as it did when the system booted.

Removing the directory responsible for settings

Another option to solve the problem when Microsoft Edge does not open is to reinstall it by deleting the directory responsible for the program settings - “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe”. This directory is systemically protected from deletion, so you will have to use the Unlocker utility, which can delete any directory from Windows 10.

  • Find the directory through Explorer by following the address “C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages”.
  • Call the utility by right-clicking on the directory to be deleted.
  • Restart your PC.

The browser will be reinstalled and its performance will improve.

Using Alternative Browsers

We can also advise you, if you have problems and Microsoft Edge crashes at startup, to simply use alternative browsers. It will take many years until Microsoft fine-tunes the browser and brings it to an ideal state. Today's popular Google Chrome browser, developed on its own engine, supports the latest Internet technologies, works stably, is constantly updated, while bugs are corrected and various functions are added. The same can be said about the Mozilla Firefox browser. Both of these browsers have many extensions that increase their functionality.

Perhaps in the near future, Microsoft Edge will become stable, but in the meantime, sometimes you have to reinstall it or clean it up to speed up its performance. Follow our recommendations and you will get your browser working properly, or use alternative programs while Edge is improved and stabilized.

If you are faced with the fact that EDGE slows down, crashes, EDGE does not start, EDGE does not install, controls do not work in EDGE, there is no sound, errors pop up, saves do not work in EDGE - we offer you the most common ways to solve these problems.

First, check whether your PC's specifications meet the minimum system requirements:

  • OS: Windows XP/Vista/7
  • Processor: 2.0 GHz
  • Memory: 1 GB
  • Video: 256 MB
  • HDD: 250 MB
  • DirectX: 9.0c

Be sure to update your video card drivers and other software

Before you remember the worst words and express them towards the developers, do not forget to go to the official website of the manufacturer of your video card and download the latest drivers. Often, drivers specially optimized for them are prepared for the release of games. You can also try installing a later version of drivers if the problem is not solved by installing the current version.

It is important to remember that you should only download the final versions of video cards - try not to use beta versions, as they may have a large number of unfound and unfixed errors.

Do not forget that for stable operation of games, installation of the latest version of DirectX is often required, which can always be downloaded from the official Microsoft website.

Edge won't start

Many problems with launching games occur due to incorrect installation. Check if there were any errors during installation, try uninstalling the game and running the installer again, after disabling the antivirus - often files necessary for the game to work are deleted by mistake. It is also important to remember that the path to the folder with the installed game should not contain Cyrillic characters - use only Latin letters and numbers for directory names.

It also doesn’t hurt to check if there is enough space on the HDD for installation. You can try to run the game as Administrator in compatibility mode for different versions of Windows.

EDGE is slow. Low FPS. Lags. Friezes. Freezes

First, install the latest drivers for your video card; this can significantly increase the FPS in the game. Also check your computer's load in the task manager (opened by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESCAPE). If before starting the game you see that some process is consuming too many resources, turn off its program or simply end this process from the task manager.

Next, go to the graphics settings in the game. First of all, turn off anti-aliasing and try lowering the post-processing settings. Many of them consume a lot of resources and disabling them will significantly improve performance without significantly affecting the picture quality.

EDGE crashes to desktop

If EDGE often crashes to your desktop slot, try to start solving the problem by reducing the quality of the graphics. It is possible that your computer simply does not have enough performance and the game cannot run correctly. It's also worth checking for updates - most modern games have a system for automatically installing new patches. Check if this option is disabled in the settings.

Black screen in Edge

More often than not, the problem with a black screen is an issue with the GPU. Check if your video card meets the minimum requirements and install the latest drivers. Sometimes a black screen is a result of insufficient CPU performance.

If everything is fine with the hardware and it meets the minimum requirements, try switching to another window (ALT+TAB), and then returning to the game window.

EDGE is not installed. Installation stuck

First of all, check if you have enough HDD space for installation. Remember that for the installation program to work correctly, the stated amount of space is required, plus 1-2 gigabytes of free space on the system disk. In general, remember the rule - there should always be at least 2 gigabytes of free space on the system disk for temporary files. Otherwise, both games and programs may not work correctly or may refuse to start at all.

Installation problems can also occur due to a lack of Internet connection or unstable operation. Also, do not forget to pause the antivirus while installing the game - sometimes it interferes with the correct copying of files or deletes them by mistake, considering them viruses.

Saves don't work in EDGE

By analogy with the previous solution, check the availability of free space on the HDD - both on the one where the game is installed and on the system drive. Often save files are stored in a documents folder, which is located separately from the game itself.

Controls do not work in EDGE

Sometimes game controls do not work due to multiple input devices being connected at the same time. Try disabling the gamepad or, if for some reason you have two keyboards or mice connected, leave only one pair of devices. If your gamepad does not work, then remember that games are officially supported only by controllers defined as Xbox joysticks. If your controller is detected differently, try using programs that emulate Xbox joysticks (for example, x360ce).

Sound does not work in EDGE

Check if the sound works in other programs. After this, check whether the sound is turned off in the game settings and whether the sound playback device to which your speakers or headset is connected is selected there. Next, while the game is running, open the mixer and check if the sound there is muted.

If you are using an external sound card, check for new drivers on the manufacturer's website.

At the moment, the vast majority of users use Microsoft operating systems. This is due to the fact that Windows OS is easy to use, requiring the user to have a minimum amount of knowledge and skills when working with a computer. The company develops special additional programs for comfort, which make the work of the common person even easier. However, this does not mean that the company's software product does not contain errors and is always able to work correctly.

The functionality and performance of Microsoft Edge are really up to par. However, the young age of the application resulted in a number of problems that led to launch and performance problems. Developers try to improve their product and fix bugs whenever possible. In the meantime, there are problems in which the browser does not work, you need to understand how to deal with them. This is exactly what will be discussed below.

All browsers eventually start to work slower and take longer to load. This is due to the fact that while the application is running, garbage accumulates in it - browsing history, page cache, cookies, etc. If no action is taken, productivity decreases. There are several ways to correct the situation.

Browser tools:

  • Open Microsoft Edge.
  • Go to browser settings.
  • In the block "Clear browsing data" press "Choose what you want to clean". An additional window will open where we mark the elements that you are going to delete. It is worth noting that when cleaning "Form data" And "Passwords" , your saved passwords and auto-filling of forms will disappear, so it is not recommended to do this unless absolutely necessary.
  • After selecting, click on the button "Clear". The application has been cleared of garbage and its performance should return to normal.

CCleaner:

  • Open CCleaner.
  • The “Cleaning” tab will be immediately available for viewing.
  • We check whether all browser components are selected for removal. You can see them by searching for the name Microsoft Edge.
  • Cleaning is done by pressing a similar button.

It is worth considering that the utility removes garbage not only from the selected browser, but from all programs that are marked, be careful.

Reset Microsoft Edge settings

  • Find the Internet properties control. To do this we use the combination "Win+R" or call a window "Run". Next, enter the command "inetcpl.cpl" and launch.
  • A window will open "Properties: Internet". Go to the tab "Additionally". There we press the button "Reset Internet Explorer settings" .
  • Reboot Windows 10.

After rebooting, the browser opens correctly.

Create an account

This solution is a kind of crutch, but it still helps to get rid of the existing problem. You will need a new account in the system. This will give you a copy of Edge with the original settings.

Create a new account:

  • Go to system parameters.
  • We go through the tabs sequentially "Accounts/Family and other users". In the dialog box that opens, click on the link "Add a user for this computer" .
  • Select an item “I don’t have this person’s login information.” .
  • Next, skip creating a Microsoft account. To do this, select the item "Add a user without a Microsoft account" .
  • Afterwards we fill in the necessary data and complete the creation.

This solution is not very effective, because the second account does not contain all the system settings that were made when installing the OS. But this way you will get a browser that starts again and works stably.

Deleting the settings folder

  • First, let's enable the display of hidden folders in the system.
  • Next, let's go to the desired directory, which is located at this address: "C:\Users\"Windows 10 Username"\AppData\Local\Packages"
  • Delete the folder "Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe". The name may vary depending on the version of Windows 10. (How to enable the display of hidden files and folders).
  • Restart the computer and check the functionality of the browser.

Since the folder you want to delete is a system folder, getting rid of it is not so easy. If you can’t remove it using standard methods, use the Unlocker utility.

PowerShell

This solution is suitable for advanced users who are not afraid to work with their hands. We will need the PowerShell console and administrator rights.

  • First, let's find the console in Windows 10. Call the search using the WIN+Q key combination, or by clicking on the corresponding icon. In the search bar enter "PowerShell" .
  • Let's launch the console. To do this, call up the context menu by right-clicking on the icon and select "Run as administrator" .
  • Let's enter the command: cd C:\Users\"Windows 10 username" . The name can be viewed by going to the disk C to a folder "Users" or "Users".
  • Next you need to enter the command and click on Enter:
    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach (Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml" -Verbose)

This will restore the Edge browser and work without any problems.

Video

It happens that you turn on your Windows 10 PC and realize that Microsoft Edge does not work. First thought: thank God, now you can use other browsers. Unless, of course, you are a schoolboy whose dad and mom forbade him to do this through. It should be noted here that the Edge browser is an integral part of the OS. It cannot be removed by any means. If you just delete the entire folder directly from Explorer, assigning the necessary rights to yourself.

Yes, Edge is not easy to take down. But stop it from starting - please! Sometimes an error window appears, in other cases absolutely nothing happens. Generally speaking, Edge transmits a large amount of information to the server. This is the so-called telemetry collected from each PC. This is the reason why the hard drive is constantly working, it also loads the network.

System File Checker (not working)

We specifically removed the browser and will now see if the tools recommended by the community will help. In the first place is the advice to restore system files with the sfc command.

Did not help…

Create a new account (work)

As often happens, the problem was solved by the one who asked the question. Here's what he writes on the Microsoft Answers site.

All that remains is to check this advice. Let’s immediately create a new local account with admin rights and see what happens.

There is no result... You cannot always believe what is written on the official website. However... to our surprise, after rebooting Edge started working under the new account. Now let's see what's going on underneath what we've recreated. We see again “Hello Andrey” (I. Allegrova), then the user’s split personality, and...

Our browser has already registered in three places and is working again. The user actually solved his problem without reinstalling dozens (as he was advised).

Use this method to your health, but do not accidentally destroy your files stored on the desktop and in user folders.

Reinstallation (not working)

Don't worry about how to reinstall Microsoft Edge, because this path leads to nowhere. Internet Explorer, which is stored in Program Files when opened for the first time, is said to offer a “try Edge” option. Without hesitation, we will show readers where this leads.

Via PowerShell (not working)

A number of resources have copied old instructions (even before 1511) for restoring system packages via PowerShell. According to our information, the method under the anniversary version does not work. Therefore, we will not consider it in detail.

Which method should I choose?

Now that the browser is already working, you can look at such advice with a smile, but when you have to open page after page and leaf through stupid guides, this leads to confusion. Few people managed, for example, to cope with such a problem: you turn on the laptop, and there is a blue screen. And it says: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors. And ten did it. One moment it was a healthy PC, now it won’t even open the desktop. No wonder so many people abroad prefer Apple.

So be careful when using this product and go off the beaten path. Don't be foolish because you couldn't open that page or visit that site from under your beloved Edge. The only solution found to solve the problem is given above.
