The first thing that catches your eye is the thickness. This is not so much the merit of the engineers, but a cunning trick of the designers. With dimensions of 132.4 x 66.2 x 10.1 mm, the HTC 8X is fairly average in size. But the thinning of the edges gives the impression that it is thinner than it actually is. It also fits well, both on the surface and in the hands. This is a one-piece design, and on the one hand everything is so beautiful and neat (this is good), but at the expense of a memory slot and a replaceable battery (bad). It does not have a replaceable battery and a slot for flash memory.

On the front panel there is a 4.3-inch HD display with a resolution of 720x1280. Front camera, speaker and three Windows keys Phone - back, search and menu. In the fall of 2012, new products were announced, now on Windows Phone 8: the main role in the line of two devices is played by the HTC 8X, which was the embodiment of the top-end WP8 smartphone from HTC. Design

After the presentation of new HTC products, few people could resist criticizing the manufacturer. Indeed, the outline of the body is extremely reminiscent of the Nokia Lumia of the previous model year. It would be incorrect to call the model an exact copy, but it is quite easy to note the similarity of the body lines. And this is hardly the desire of HTC designers, who are usually not known for their love of copying other people's ideas. Is Microsoft really forcing the creation of similar devices? Strange approach.

But if you take the smartphone in your hand and compare it with the Lumia 800 or 900, then doubts go away, this is completely different models, despite the uniform design of the front plane.

The dimensions of the smartphone are 132 x 66.2 x 10.1 mm, weight 130 g. For comparison, the dimensions of the HTC Titan: 131.5 x 70.7 x 9.9 mm, weight 160 g, as well as the Nokia Lumia 900: 127, 8 x 68.5 x 11.5 mm, weight 160 g. As you can see, HTC has created a compact, lightweight, and most importantly, convenient device.

I like the idea of ​​Windows Phone device manufacturers releasing models in a variety of bright colors. There are many conservative users for whom this is unacceptable; for them, black color is provided in the range of any brand. But then there are lively and non-trivial colors. HTC Windows Phone 8X is sold in red, light green or blue, all of which look at least fresh.

The case is without any removable parts, unless you take into account the microSIM tray located on the side. The rest of the design is monolithic, the assembly is excellent, everything is made of very high quality.

In front there is a front camera and a speaker, and there are light and proximity sensors.

Below the screen are three unchanged backlit touch buttons, familiar from any Windows Phone device. The arrow takes you back one step, and holding this key opens the menu of running tasks. Central leads to main screen from any application. The last button brings up the search menu. The keys have white backlighting.

At the top end you can see a 3.5 mm headphone jack. On the same side there is a screen lock button. It is completely flat and inconvenient to use.

At the bottom we find a universal microUSB port; a charger or cable is connected to it.

On the right is a long, thin volume key. It is flat and not particularly comfortable to press. Below is a key for taking photographs. It is two-position, it turned out to be a little more convenient than the other buttons.

The back has an unusual curved shape; due to such rounded sides, the smartphone fits perfectly in the palm of your hand and is comfortable to hold. The surface has a good soft-touch coating that will not allow the phone to slip out of your hand. At the same time, it turned out to be not very durable in itself. The sample that I received for testing was apparently tested for strength; there were scratches and abrasions left. After certain cleaning procedures, we managed to get the smartphone in order.

At the top there is an 8-megapixel camera lens and an LED flash. The bell speaker is located at the very bottom.

Screen

The flagship device received a capacitive Super-LCD2 display with a diagonal of 4.3 inches. Him a high resolution- solid 720x1280 pixels, pixel density is 342 ppi. Multi-touch is supported, working with a smartphone is convenient, sensitivity and response are excellent.

The smartphone is equipped with an accelerometer, a proximity sensor and a brightness sensor. The coating is made of durable Gorilla Glass 2 material, which protects the display from minor damage.

At the heart of HTC Windows Phone 8X is a dual-core Qualcomm 8960 processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz. The smartphone has 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. Of these, about 13 GB are available for storing user data. It is impossible to add space for content; the memory is not replaceable. The limitation is not pleasant; for a flagship it would be worth offering at least 32 GB, as Nokia or Samsung have already done when offering memory cards. In general, the smartphone works very quickly, there is a lightning-fast reaction to all user actions. It was not possible to notice any differences in speed from other devices on this platform; they are all equally fast.

Interface

The lock screen can be any image set by the user. Here you will see time and date information. At the bottom of the event line, icons of new messages or calls will be displayed if they were left unattended by the user. This also includes data about future events recorded in the calendar. The number of notifications of each type will be indicated. It is now possible to display additional data, for example, notifications from clients from social networks or the weather. Thus, application developers can significantly expand user freedom by adding similar functions to their software.

Information about network connections. If the player is running, then from here the widget responsible for the process of playing music is controlled. This element will also help you change the sound profile mode. For those who want to protect the contents of their smartphone from prying eyes, a password request function is provided. The status line at the top contains information about wireless connections and time. Data about new events does not appear here. In this case, most often this period disappears, the battery charge level is not visible. You must touch the top of the screen to bring up this menu.

On the desktop, tile icons are arranged according to the user's wishes. Their size is adjusted, the choice is made of three different formats, up to 4 labels are immediately added to one row, and not 2, as was the case before. Animation is supported, for example, the gallery icon will show something like a slide presentation. Real-time weather indication is displayed. As information about new events becomes available, corresponding icons appear on the icons. This is the number of new SMS, emails or missed calls. The list of shortcuts scrolls up and down; it doesn’t move any other way. The stupid black bar, which ate up quite a lot of space, has disappeared; now the space is used more logically.

The menu lists in alphabetical order all the programs that are installed on the phone. This includes both standard applications and those subsequently added by the device owner. For menu design, there are two background options: black or white, as well as a rich palette of multi-colored themes that you can quickly change appearance smartphone. If you hold the return button, the list will start earlier running applications. The menu configures the operating mode: you can set those applications that cannot be closed in the background. This option does not apply to all applications, but there is hope that developers will take this point into account in the future.

Voice control of the smartphone is supported to launch programs (for example, turning on an alarm or making a call). Russian language is supported, which is great. So far the functionality is quite limited, but I think the ability to control by voice will be actively developed and refined, so we’ll look at it in the future.

Contacts

The phone book is divided into three sections. The first one shows all the names that are in the device's memory. The second one displays those that were used most often, these are the most popular contacts. The last column brings together news from social networks. Contacts are displayed in a list that allows you to see the image assigned to the subscriber. The full first and last name cannot fit on one line. Above the list of names, about a quarter of the screen is taken up by a large section header. A small area on the side is occupied by the adjacent column. The phone book is divided into small groups, with a letter highlighted in bright color above each of them.

The settings specify the type of sorting of names and the option for displaying them. There are book filter settings. From here you can remove data from social networks if they interfere. By holding your finger on the line with the subscriber's name, this contact can be moved to the desktop, deleted or edited.

When a new user is created, various data are assigned to him. New user receives a first name, last name, patronymic, place of work, nickname, title, picture. He is assigned several phone numbers different types: mobile, home, work, organization, pager, fax. Three types of email are defined. The contact is given additional fields: address, website, birthday, note, anniversary, loved one, children, office location, position. Not only one of the files in the phone’s memory is set as a ringtone, but also any other one.

The search menu will help you find the right person. The phone allows you to create user groups. They will be highlighted separately in front of the general list of names. By adding users to each group, you can follow the lives of your friends, see their messages and pictures. Of course, you can write an email, SMS or call them from here. The “Rooms” function has appeared, an example of a classic contact group, but with expanded functionality: it’s easy to communicate with a limited circle of people, exchanging pictures, calendar entries or notes. Moreover, this group includes not only users of WP smartphones, but also owners of other devices.

Calls

The telephone part is divided into four groups: the call log itself, dialing, phone book and search. The device cannot remember the partition that was last used. Thus, to dial a number, you will always need to perform an extra action associated with moving from the call list to the virtual keyboard.

During the dialogue, information about the duration of the conversation is displayed on the screen, and before that a picture will be displayed if it has been assigned to the contact. The virtual keyboard displays Latin characters, but they will not help when dialing a number. Functions automatic selection There are no suitable numbers here. The only assistant in this matter is the search option. Alternatively, you can later install a more functional application in order to expand the functionality of this important component.

The call list is organized very simply. Here, the entire call history is a long string of numbers, it doesn’t matter whether the numbers are the same or not - the phone does not know how to combine calls of the same type. The caller's name or number will be displayed if the data has not been saved in the phone memory. In order to highlight the type of call (incoming or outgoing), multi-colored backlighting is used. If you select a number from the list, you will see the history of conversations with this subscriber.

Messages

Correspondence is formed in two sections. The first consists of correspondence in the form of SMS and MMS, the other - from Facebook contacts. Messages are displayed in a column. If you expand the correspondence window, messages will appear that are divided into blocks. At the same time, incoming and sent SMS differ from each other in shades, which makes it easier to read. In addition, the date and time the message was received, as well as the number or name of the person with whom the communication is taking place, is noted here.

When writing a message, you need to select a sender. You can simply type the numbers on the line at the top of the screen or select an existing contact. Previously used numbers cannot be used. A text message automatically turns into a multimedia message if you add a picture or other data to it.

Email

The device offers a mailbox setup wizard that works with popular email services, so users of Gmail, Yandex or Mail.ru will not have any problems. Each account is assigned a name, and the mailbox check interval is configured: push mode, every 15, 30 or 60 minutes. You can also check your email manually. The deadline for loading correspondence is set, and the signature text that will be displayed on the sent letter is included. Mailbox offers several category headings: all, unread, due, important. The sender's name is highlighted in large font, with the contents of the letter below in neat text. To the right is the time or date of receipt. New letters are highlighted in bright colors.

By holding your finger on a line with a message, you can delete it, mark it as read, move it to another folder, or assign a mark. Incoming emails with attachments will display a paperclip icon to help you understand that something has been added to the message. There is enough space on the screen for information about five letters. Below you can see four icons. The first allows you to create a new letter, the second is responsible for selecting several objects, the other allows you to check your mail. The latter opens a search menu within the correspondence archive.

When you open a received email, you will see information about the sender, time and date of receipt, and content. Using multi-touch, you can easily scale text to a convenient size. However, text cannot adapt to the boundaries of the screen. The type of attachments is shown, the device allows you to download and view “office” type files, but you cannot see where the document was downloaded. For clarity, undownloaded attachments are displayed as a paperclip icon. Those that have already downloaded receive a different icon, corresponding to their usual symbol on the computer - icon Word file known to any user.

Entering text

You can choose from portrait or landscape mode. In both cases, about half of the screen is allocated for the keyboard. A separate key is available to change the input language. Another one special button stores a lot of emoticons in memory. They are in the form of symbols, and not the usual emoticons, which will require some knowledge in order to choose when sending desired type. Sound accompaniment has been implemented when typing; it can be disabled. Select the desired language layouts from the menu. If you hold your finger on a letter key, a menu with additional symbols will appear. For example, in the Russian keyboard, Ъ is called through ь, and Ъ through E.

Implemented copying and pasting text. A cursor works on a similar principle, helping to correct typos. The built-in auto-word substitution works very well, it has a wide vocabulary, I liked it. For now, Swype is not available for Windows Phone, so you have to make do with this option. You can add new words to your vocabulary, increasing your phone's memory. In terms of ease of input and speed of typing, there are no complaints about the device. Due to the large area allocated for virtual keys, typing is convenient. There are additional emoticons and elegant pictures that can be sent in messages.

Calendar

The device offers a choice of several ways to display information. This is a day scheduled by the hour, a list of planned events, or tasks displayed in a separate column. In addition, all data is displayed in the form of a regular monthly plan. It is important to note that in some squares there will be something written, but you won’t be able to see it. The device allows you to simultaneously use several calendars, each of them is highlighted in a different color. In the settings you can change it by selecting one of the possible options.

When creating a new event, several fields are filled in: topic, location, calendar, time, duration are selected. Additionally, a reminder is set that is triggered at the start of the event, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 minutes, 18 hours, one day, one week in advance. A daily repeat is turned on, on every weekday, on every day of the week that coincides with the day the event was created, on every date that coincides with the date the event was created. Participants of the event are added who will receive notifications about it via e-mail. Also to new entry notes are created.

Browser

The browser allows you to keep up to six windows open at the same time. The loading speed of resources is high, and the operation of the application itself is also pleasing. It is fast, scrolling through even large sites occurs without delay. Unfortunately, the browser does not know how to adapt a scaled font to the screen borders. You have to move around the page to see the hidden text.

The address bar is located at the bottom, right under your fingers, which is very convenient. There is an icon for reloading the page on the left, and an additional menu opens on the right. This includes your browsing history and bookmarks. The necessary resources can be added directly to the desktop. In the application settings, you can disable saving cookies and select a viewing mode. This item allows you to activate the mobile or full version. The application is available in landscape or portrait mode, and searches for the right words on the page.

Music

The phone supports .m4a, m4b, .mp3, .wma formats. The section with music and video is combined into a common group. This also includes podcasts, but there is no radio in this model. Another tab shows history. The last list will show the new data that has been added to the phone. In each of the categories, except the first, file covers are displayed; it all looks very nice. The Music section will offer a list of files, which are ordered by name depending on the selected criterion. The following options are offered: artists, albums, compositions, playlists, genres. If you click on one of the letters, you can use the quick search function among the data.

When a song is played, the file's cover art appears on the screen. At the top there are three standard player control keys. Below is information about the artist, album and track title. Under the song name, the names of the next two songs are indicated in small print. There is also information about the playing time and total duration of the song. However, there is no rewind function using the scroll bar, it does not work. To do this, you will need to hold down the Forward or Backward key to move to the desired area.

The repeat mode is turned on for all songs or just one. There is a mixed playback mode. You can also mark your favorite composition separately. If you click on the volume control button, a small menu will open, which will display information about the track and buttons for moving between songs. It is also available when the screen is locked, which is convenient.

Video

The advantages of the updated software include expanded support for codecs, so that the smartphone will show many films after simple copying data into his memory. Declared support for .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, m4v, asf, .wmv. The interface is still the same simple and ascetic. The screen displays the duration of the video and the time since the start of its playback. There are three player control keys, as well as a scroll bar that helps you quickly move through the movie.

Camera

An 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash is installed. There is also a front 2-megapixel camera. Interestingly, this is a wide-angle camera, so it will be more convenient to communicate with friends - they will be able to see more thanks to such a module. Shooting is launched not only from the menu, but also using a dedicated button on the side. You need to press it and hold your finger for five seconds, after which you can take a photo. The button is two-position, comfortable. You can shoot by touching the display with your finger, while setting a point to focus on. An excellent opportunity is to start shooting in locked mode, this allows you not to waste extra time, but to immediately start taking photographs.

The screen acts as a viewfinder. On the right is a button for switching between photo and video shooting modes. Below is the digital zoom key. The last button is responsible for the settings menu. On the left you can see a small part of the previously taken frame. From here you can go directly to the gallery if you click on this picture.

The facial recognition feature allows you to tag people in your photos. After this, the photos are uploaded to Facebook. There is a built-in application for editing pictures, it will allow you to apply various effects. Watch Several alarms are stored in memory. Each of them is given a signal time and a repeat mode by day of the week. You can choose from melodies from the device's memory. In addition, you can assign a name to the alarm clock. The calculator offers all the necessary functions to carry out calculations. If you turn the device on its side, an additional settings menu will open. The big advantage of new smartphones will be the free copying of data, which eliminates the need to work with the Zune. Now the smartphone is detected as external drive, content is copied easily and quickly, which is something that users lacked before. Profiles The device offers a single sound profile. It is not possible to configure multiple alert options. At the same time, a significant drawback should be considered the combination of sound in applications and alert signals. For example, if you mute the music in the player, it will automatically decrease in volume for calls, SMS notifications, and alarms. It is difficult to understand what caused this logic, but in practice this option is inconvenient. Battery The smartphone is equipped with a non-replaceable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1800 mAh. The manufacturer does not provide official data on operating time. According to personal feelings, the model began to work longer than the HTC Titan, which had a larger screen and a smaller battery, which can be called a logical development, given the new, more energy-efficient hardware and software. The smartphone is enough to last a day, although scenarios cannot be ruled out when the smartphone will have to be charged in the late afternoon. With my load of 20 minutes of calls, constant background synchronization, 1-2 hours of listening to music, 1.5-2 hours mobile internet and 20-30 photos the smartphone worked for one day with automatic mode backlight adjustments. The battery saving option will extend the life of the phone; it will disable some functions. Charging from a computer's USB connector is supported. The total charging time for the phone is just over an hour. In continuous video playback mode, the phone worked for 5 hours 45 minutes at maximum screen brightness with Wi-Fi turned on. Conclusion The speaker here is normal, but without much volume reserve. Skip incoming call difficult, the device rings loudly. The vibration alert is average in strength. I liked the size of the device; the smartphone is small and light, which compares favorably with its more massive counterparts from Nokia. At the same time, you can already find a phone at a more attractive price, at the level of 20 thousand rubles for a certified device. So far, Samsung and Nokia have shown their WP flagships, in addition to HTC. And while the Finnish device has been on sale for a long time, the Koreans are in no hurry to release their device to retail. I liked the smartphone; unlike the latest Nokia products, it does not suffer from gigantomania and offers more practical sizes. But if you look at the phone's capabilities, it doesn't look as interesting as the Lumia 920: a simpler camera, fewer interesting applications, and an unimpressive amount of internal memory. Its popularity and positive reviews increase confidence and undoubtedly predict a promising future for Microsoft mobile products. The gadget has great processing power, LTE speed and a high-quality camera, which allows it to look brilliant compared to its competitors.

However, the HTC PM23200 Windows Phone 8X is not without its shortcomings. Its camera still doesn't have as many useful options as other top-end smartphones (for example, Nokia Lumia 920). Missing or underdeveloped apps for Microsoft's mobile OS may also turn off some users. When it comes to the tough competition between popular phones - be they Windows, Android or iOS - even small details can make the difference in your choice and purchase.

Appearance and design

HTC Windows Phone 8X has a thin body, a smooth front panel and square, non-rounded corners. In turn, the screen offers a large black frame. The phone is available in several colors - black, red, bright yellow and deep blue.

The smartphone feels comfortable to hold in your hands thanks to its soft-touch finish and slightly curved back panel. It fits easily in your pocket and doesn't take up too much space.

Platform, performance, autonomy

The smartphone received a powerful Qualcomm S4 Krait hardware platform, two 1.5 GHz cores and Adreno 225 graphics. This platform, of course, is significantly inferior in speed to the quad-core Tegra 3 from NVIDIA installed in the One X+. However, the smartphone simply flies; not a single delay in operation was detected during use. Of course, this is greatly facilitated by the 1 GB of RAM. In addition, S4 is much more economical, and the OS allows you to save battery much better than Android.

With an average load on the smartphone, the battery charge lasts for a day and a half, which can already be considered a victory. By average load I mean about an hour of calls, music on the way to and from work, as well as an hour of Internet via Wi-Fi or 3G. Of course, if you play, it’s unlikely that the smartphone will even survive until the evening. However, the battery still remains the weakest link of any mobile device.

It is noteworthy that the Lumia 820, which weighs more, is equipped with an even smaller battery (1650 mAh versus 1800). Why this happened, it’s worth asking Nokia representatives, this is a stone in their garden.

HTC Windows Phone 8X is equipped with a Wi-Fi module that can operate at two frequencies, 2400 and 5000 MHz. There are also other modules on board wireless communication: Bluetooth 3.1 with support for A2DP and EDR and NFC. Unfortunately, the kit does not come with tags, as with, say, some Sony smartphones. And, of course, the smartphone can be used as a Wi-Fi router.

Interface, software

The device became one of the pioneers of the Windows Phone 8 OS, along with the aforementioned Lumia 920 and its younger brother, the HTC Windows Phone 8S. It is obvious that this operating system is much more successful than its predecessor. There are all the ingredients for success: a user-friendly interface, fast operation, successful optimization to save battery power, and most importantly, the ability to quickly create and port programs thanks to the use of an API similar to desktop technologies.

A distinctive feature of HTC Windows Phone 8X in terms of software is its proprietary lock screen. In addition, it is now very easy to take screenshots without a computer.

But for some reason, optimizing applications for the new operating system happens very slowly. Most of the old flaws remained in place; there was no global work on the errors. In general, it is extremely difficult to believe in the success of Windows Phone 8 at this stage. However, we really like the way this OS looks. I like many of the features. I like that HTC, Samsung and Nokia are trying to further emphasize the uniqueness of their Windows phones. But we cannot get rid of skepticism.
