What's good about Sony Xperia phones?

  • Stylish, reliable case

One of the most valuable Sony benefits Xperia is rugged and literally unsinkable. Most models can be successfully submerged to a depth of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. In addition, numerous drop tests demonstrate the phones' high resistance to falls and other mechanical impacts. And, of course, the Sony design team made the smartphones stylish and catchy. With such an accessory you will not go unnoticed.

  • Excellent camera

High quality shooting is Sony's strong point. Starting from the earliest models, each smartphone stands out among its competitors with clear, rich pictures with good color reproduction. Even among similarly specced cameras, Sony's come out on top, thanks to its Cyber-Shot and Handycam technologies, Exmor RS™ sensor and ultra-fast BIONZ™ image processor.

  • High sound quality

Sony Walkman technology once set the vector for the development of all portable audio devices. Even today, not all flagships of competitors can boast such clear and deep sound as the Sony Xperia. Along with other advantages, there is digital noise reduction technology, thanks to which you can enjoy your favorite tracks without interference in a noisy subway or with a drill working behind the wall.

Choose your Sony Xperia

  • If you prefer the most “top” devices, your choice is the new Xperia Z5 series. These are premium smartphones, the best representatives of the Xperia line. The models offer the most reliable protection against water: you can use the phone even at the depth of the pool. A decent mid-range Android smartphone from the new Xperia NXT line

Earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Sony Mobile (formerly Sony Ericsson) along with most other mobile device manufacturers presented their series of new smartphones. The devices were united under the common name Sony Xperia and included in the new “NEXT generation” line - Xperia NXT.

All phones new series, and now there are already four of them, these are Sony Xperia S, P and U and, later joined by Sony Xperia sola, they have an extremely similar design, which within the company even received its own name - “Iconic”. The design of all devices is really so similar that they can hardly be distinguished individually in photographs. It is necessary to put them all side by side, and then, depending on the size, it will become clear “who is who.” Naturally, the largest will be the flagship. Currently, Sony Xperia S is one of them in Sony's lineup.

To be honest, this tendency of manufacturers to simplify the names of their devices to one letter is not at all encouraging. Sony, like other vendors this year, simply threw letters at the market that not only buyers, but also market players themselves are confused about. And it’s not easy for journalists either. Judge for yourself: Sony's S, P, U and HTC's X, S and V are six new models for the current season, what do you think? Adding to the confusion in consciousness is the discrepancy between the same letters and the rank of smartphones from different manufacturers. Now the letter S already denotes a device of the highest category - the flagship of the Japanese, but for the Taiwanese HTC it is just a middle class. What will happen next when there are many such letters? Soon, Chinese Huawei will also join our market with its Ascend communicators. They also have the same letters in their names... In general, all that remains is to remember what beautiful and understandable names manufacturers gave their smartphones in the past: Play, Arc, Active, Hero, Legend, etc.

Be that as it may, today we will have to consider another representative of the “letter” generation - Sony Xperia P. This is the second most important smartphone in the new Xperia NXT series - a line of new generation smartphones from Sony. As already noted, it has a very similar design to the flagship, but also differs significantly from it in a number of characteristics. It's not as powerful and is slightly smaller, but it has better button placement, a metal rather than plastic body, and it's the first to feature the new super-bright WhiteMagic screen. In some ways, the Sony Xperia P looks like a “work on the bugs” in relation to the Sony Xperia S, so a close comparison remains to be seen which smartphone will be more worthy. Let's take a closer look at the Sony Xperia P.

The Sony Xperia P communicator comes in a “new type” cardboard box. Flat and wide, it's a far cry from the phone packaging of yesteryear. By the way, it is clearly written on the box that the device can be updated operating system before new Android 4.0. So, in terms of the future, everything is rosy for the Sony Xperia P.

In addition to the smartphone itself, the kit for the Russian market includes a universal Charger with USB output, USB cable— Micro-USB for charging and synchronizing with a computer, a wired stereo headset with in-ear headphones and a standard 3.5 mm jack, as well as an HDMI cable and two NFC tags Xperia SmartTags.

Our kit did not contain tags or an HDMI cable, so we will not talk in detail about using the corresponding functions. We only hope that next time the manufacturer will send us these tags, and we will be able to show them to readers in all their glory. For now, I’ll just briefly explain what they are needed for. Such programmed tags-sensors are hung in all places of the apartment and are used to control the smartphone when brought to them. For this purpose, short-distance communication technology is used - NFC. It works roughly like this: when you go into the bedroom, say, you bring your smartphone to such a tag, and it turns on an alarm for tomorrow and also launches a program for reading books. Programming a sequence of commands is available to the user himself, and the imagination here is almost limitless.

As for the charger, it is not entirely ordinary: Sony Mobile representatives claim that it has increased power and can literally provide an entire hour of talk time for the smartphone after just 10 minutes of charging. Looking ahead, I will say that what has been said seems to be true, and the communicator charges from the new device really extremely quickly. This is especially true when you consider the traditional “gluttony” of Android in terms of energy consumption and the frequency with which owners have to resort to charging.

If we also take into account that all Sony communicators are delivered to customers with a protective film, then in general the package can be considered more than worthy. Perhaps the only thing missing is a protective case, but such generosity has already become an incredible rarity these days, so we won’t write this down as a minus.

Appearance and ease of use

The first thing to notice is that the Sony Xperia P body is made entirely of aluminum using Unibody technology, that is, laser cut from a single piece. And this is the first of the significant differences from the flagship, which, not only has a plastic body, but also has a useless cover that is not really needed for anything, but only weakens the overall strength of the structure. Here everything is the other way around: the monolithic metal body has no unnecessary parts, and therefore there is no creaking, play or cracks to speak of at all.

There were, however, some oddities: now the bottom element turned out to be a simple plastic cover, which can be removed with a slight movement of the hand, exposing only the label, but without opening access to the battery. We regret to say that the battery here is not removable, but this is not the worst thing.

The worst thing is that the manufacturer, copying the popular iPhone, went further than others and completely deprived the device of a memory card slot. This is a very alarming call. This means that the company's marketers, spying on Apple's success, also decided to artificially differentiate their communicators by such a parameter as the amount of built-in memory. But this is Android, not iOS. This platform has always been preferred by those buyers who did not want to put up with artificial restrictions in mobile devices Apple. And now, it turns out, we come to the same thing. Personally, I will not be able to purchase a Sony Xperia P precisely because I simply do not have enough memory. It is nominally only 16 GB, and of this only a little more than 11 GB is actually available to the user for downloading and storing their files. This is frankly not enough for such a powerful device in terms of hardware, which could not only replace an audio player or e-book, but also comfortably play videos in HD resolution. It could, but it won’t, because films in HD resolution “weigh” a lot, and very few of them will fit into the memory “generously” allocated for these purposes by Sony. As a result, from a powerful multimedia device, the Sony Xperia P turns into an ordinary communicator, the memory space of which is hardly enough only for the most necessary things, and the user will always “bite his elbows” from the inability to expand the storage of his smartphone. However, unfortunately, not only Sony is susceptible to this trend, so soon manufacturers will simply leave us no choice.

The SIM card slot is also not located under the cover, but is cut into the side and covered with a flap. This plug is difficult to close at first, but over time it becomes easier to close. The slot itself does not have an icon with information on how to insert the SIM card correctly, and, worst of all, the card fits into the slot either side. This is a big mistake by the manufacturer, because if you insert the SIM card incorrectly, you can only remove it with tweezers. A strange and inconvenient decision.

The remaining elements are arranged quite logically: all the buttons are assembled on one side, and the connectors are on the other, where in addition to Micro-USB there is also an HDMI connector. Among the buttons, you can consider a separate key for controlling the camera, which is very rare for Android devices. Shooting with its help becomes much more convenient, especially since this button can activate the camera even from a locked state. I took it out, pressed it - the picture is ready, everything is very convenient and fast.

The power and lock key, by the way, has “moved” to the side, which will certainly please users who complained about the inconvenient location of this element at the top of the Sony Xperia S. And this is another useful difference this phone from the flagship. Here at the top there is only a 3.5 mm jack for a standard headphone plug.

Otherwise, everything is familiar here: the screen is covered with scratch-resistant protective mineral glass, touch sensors and a front camera peephole for video communication are located above the display. By the way, several successful video calls via Skype were made using this camera, which showed excellent results. The sound is excellent, the image too, no choking or slowing down. Thus, there will be video communications, as long as there is a decent data transmission channel. Our tests were conducted over Wi-Fi.

There is also a hole for the earpiece at the top. It is not covered with any beautiful grille - it is just a gap into which dust and debris will accumulate over time. True, the edges of this gap are not as sharp as those of the Sony Xperia S. That one’s ear hurt painfully on these sharp edges, but here there is no such problem.

Below the screen there is a traditional row of buttons to control the system. The buttons, unfortunately, are touch sensitive and their location is unusual: they are placed on a transparent plastic strip that crosses the body at horizontal position. The fact that the buttons are touch sensitive is, of course, bad, but if you remember the disgrace that manufacturers have caused with the Sony Xperia S buttons, then your soul somehow becomes lighter. On the flagship, it was impossible to press these buttons on the strip - you had to press somewhere on top of them, and thus there were a lot of erroneous presses. Here you can click “correctly” - on the strip itself, and this is the third significant positive difference between the Sony Xperia P and the Sony Xperia S.

The device is offered on the market in three colors: silver, black and red. There is no white option - it was left for the flagship. And it’s a shame, he would have looked good here. As for the colors offered, the silver one, which is shown in our pictures, looks the least advantageous. Black and red, thanks to their matte surface and their deep shades, make a much more attractive impression. There is no gloss here, and there is nowhere to leave fingerprints except on the screen.

The dimensions of the device can be called successful; its size and weight allow you to comfortably place your smartphone in any pocket, even your chest pocket. Thanks to these parameters, the communicator fits comfortably in the hand, which compares favorably with the Sony Xperia S, whose dimensions are too large for the average palm.

If we compare the dimensions of the smartphone with the dimensions of other devices with a similar screen diagonal, the most famous of them look like this in comparison with the Sony Xperia P:

  • Sony Xperia P - 59.5x122x10.5 mm
  • HTC Incredible S - 64x120x11.7 mm
  • Samsung Galaxy S Plus - 64x122x10 mm
  • LG Optimus 2X - 63x124x11 mm
  • Huawei Honor – 61×122×11 mm

The back of the phone, although sloping, is traditional for recent phones Sony style However, it still allows you to use the phone lying on the table - it doesn't roll too much. And what was especially pleasing was the good location of the hole for the external speaker: it is not at the back, but on the side, so no position can prevent sound from coming out. The hole, by the way, is covered with a nice metal grille, which is so lacking in the auditory speaker.

In general, the new communicator looks not only modern and stylish, but also quite expensive, which is important for people who respect the prestigious side of their image. The angular design and chopped features distinguish Sony smartphones from the same type of sleek Samsung and HTC, and are most similar in spirit to the innovative design of the Nokia N9, which users liked so much. As for ease of use, everything is not so clear. A lot of artificial limitations, such as: non-removable battery, inconvenient SIM card slot, microSIM format, frankly weak accumulator battery and the small non-expandable memory greatly cancel out many of the positive qualities of the communicator, turning it more into a fashion device than a technically advanced device.

Screen

On Sony screen The Xperia P is worth a closer look because it is the most interesting point in the description of the new communicator. This is a TFT matrix made using the new WhiteMagic technology, which adds a fourth, white sub-pixel to the traditional red, green and blue, forming a pixel (RGBW).

Thus, instead of three sub-pixels glowing simultaneously, in creating white Only one is involved, which allows you to simultaneously increase the screen brightness and reduce power consumption.

Four sub-pixels can work in different combinations when different settings brightness set automatically depending on ambient lighting. You can manually set the settings to maximum, then the screen becomes extremely bright. This has a positive effect on image perception in bright sunlight.

In addition to WhiteMagic, another technology affects the image quality in the Sony Xperia P. The picture is further enhanced using proprietary Mobile Bravia Engine technology, making it even more realistic. This technology is software, and it only works while viewing photos and videos. This technology allows you to display a picture in a more natural way for the eye, adding clarity, saturation, contrast and, moreover, removing some of the noise.

The physical parameters of the display are as follows: 50x89 mm, diagonal - 102 mm (4 inches). Pixel resolution: 960×540 (qHD). This is capacitive touch screen with multi-touch control function - multi-touch. The display reacts sensitively to finger touches, there are no erroneous clicks or sticking. The viewing angles are maximum - about 178 degrees - like IPS matrices, there is practically no inversion of black color when deflected. Color rendition is good, the colors are natural and rich, the pixel resolution is high, and no grain is visible to the eye. The screen is extremely good in all respects, and this is one of the strongest trump cards on the side of the Sony Xperia P.

Sound

To be honest, I expected more from an external speaker: the sound is not that loud, and besides, high frequencies, no bass. It doesn’t even help that the sound here is additionally processed using proprietary xLoud technology. This technology developed by Sony does not affect the sound quality in any way, but serves to enhance the volume of the main speaker. But turning it on and off, I didn't notice any difference.

To ensure that the table surface does not interfere with the propagation of sound, the hole for the external speaker is located on one of the side faces, so the sound will not be blocked by anything.

As for the sound in the headphones, I also quite liked the quality of the included stereo headset with in-ear headphones. The sound is loud, clear and has a full spectrum of frequencies - it is not deprived of low frequencies. In addition, the included earbuds come in all three sizes, so this headset will fit any ear. But, since the Sony Xperia P is equipped with a universal 3.5 mm audio output, you can connect any other headphones to the device.

The capabilities of the built-in music player are enough to extract quite decent sound from the headphones, the quality of which can be adjusted with several settings and even a built-in equalizer.

The smartphone has an FM radio, but it only works with a connected headset.

Camera

Sony Xperia P has two cameras: the front one, for video communication, and the main one, with automatic focusing and LED backlight. The front camera with VGA resolution (0.3 megapixels), as already mentioned, is quite suitable for video conferencing and for using the screen as a mirror.

The main camera module is more interesting: the 8-megapixel camera is equipped with a Sony Exmor R CMOS matrix and produces images of very decent quality. By default, the camera settings are set to shoot in a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9 with a resolution of 3264×1836 pixels, that is, 6 megapixels. The quality and clarity of photographs in original resolution can be assessed by clicking on the thumbnails.

To achieve maximum resolution, you need to independently set the camera settings to 8 megapixel shooting. Here are the same landscapes, shot in 4:3 format with a resolution of 3264x2448 pixels.

Below is a scattering of photographs taken during daylight hours with maximum settings. You can independently evaluate the quality of the shooting by clicking on the thumbnails and downloading the originals in unchanged quality.

The camera can shoot video in Full HD resolution. Here are a couple of ten-second videos shot at maximum settings at 29 frames per second. The videos are saved in mp4 format and have a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels (clip No. 1 - 18 MB, video No. 2 - 18.2 MB).

Thanks to automatic focusing, close objects, as well as text from paper or a monitor screen, are captured well by the camera.

Sony representatives separately emphasize the shooting speed of the cameras of their new smartphones. When you press a special key, the camera turns on and takes pictures, even if the phone was locked. In the settings, you can change the purpose of this button to activate the camera, but without shooting. The shooting itself can also be carried out without using a hardware key - by pressing a virtual button on the screen.

The Sony Xperia P camera can also take the now fashionable panoramic shots. To do this, just select the appropriate shooting mode and simply move the lens along a horizontal line. The program will do everything itself. An example photo is in front of you. The quality and resolution are not great, but overall the feature looks attractive.

Software and telephone part

As for the software, there is nothing special to describe here: the Sony Xperia P went on sale and runs the familiar and already obsolete version of the Android OS 2.3.7 Gingerbread with the promised ability to upgrade to version 4.0.

The standard Google Android interface is modified using its own software shell, which slightly changes and complements it, but not much. Five at a time home screens branded widgets like weather are scattered across the desktop, the general internal list of programs can be sorted by several parameters, and when you turn it on for the first time, the proprietary application offers to configure the smartphone.

Some popular apps like file manager Astro, a set of office tools for reading and editing OfficeSuite5 documents, TrackID, a program for recognizing musical compositions, or Timescape, a hub for social activities of friends, can be very useful, or at least do not interfere with life. But the obsessiveness with which some pre-installed programs persistently remind you of themselves is a little annoying. In particular, I didn’t really like the manufacturer’s action towards the buyer, forcing them to watch a bright reminder from the McAfee antivirus about the need to install it. When you try to install the program, it prompts you to enter your number mobile phone to register the product, otherwise the application will not work. After refusing such registration, the “reminder” disappears after some time, but the aftertaste, as they say, remains.

Sony Xperia P copes with telephone functions at the level of modern devices. The phone holds the cellular network reliably, in conditions poor reception does not lose connection. No freezes or spontaneous reboots were noticed during the week of testing. The Wi-Fi and GPS modules have also been tested in operation, and there are no complaints about them either.

Performance

The Sony Xperia P hardware platform (model LT22i) is based on the ST-Ericsson NovaThor U8500 SoC. The central processor here is a dual-core ARMv7 operating at 1000 MHz. It is supported in graphics processing by the Mali-400MP video accelerator. All this is served by a whole 1 GB random access memory. The storage available to the user for uploading their own files is just over 11 GB.

It is not possible to expand non-volatile memory using microSD cards here, and this is a very significant limitation. It’s impossible to nod towards the 16 GB modification of the iPhone: there, anyone has the opportunity to choose an absolutely similar device with a large amount of memory. Here the manufacturer left no choice: either buy what you have, or look for something else.

In Quadrant Standard, the Sony Xperia P scored a respectable 2189 points, beating Google's flagship smartphone Galaxy Nexus, but slightly behind its own flagship - the Sony Xperia S scored 3104 points in this test.

According to the results of the comprehensive AnTuTu Benchmark, the test subject was slightly behind the LG Optimus 2X on NVIDIA Tegra 2, while the Sony Xperia S, on the contrary, was ahead of it. In general, the smartphone turned out to be quite decent, in terms of hardware performance, “average”, or even a little higher level. Here are its results in comparison with the top flagships of our time.

We tested graphics performance in NenaMark2 (v2.2). Based on the results of several runs, the Mali-400MP graphics accelerator in this device produced a good average result of almost 30 fps.

As for my own impressions, handling the Sony Xperia P does not cause irritation: all lists and desktops scroll smoothly, without jerks, there are no sticking when flipping, programs open quickly, and games Google Play don't slow down. The device is quite capable of playing video with a resolution of up to 720p without slowdowns, another thing is that there is no point in filling such a small amount of memory with such large files.

Battery life

The lithium-ion battery installed in the Sony Xperia P has a capacity of 1320 mAh that is suspiciously small by modern standards, but in standard use it is still capable of keeping the smartphone running for 24 hours. Clearly, WhiteMagic technology is doing its job.

Testing did not make a good impression - in all use cases the battery turned out to be frankly weak. Continuous playback of mp3 with the screen off lasted 24 hours 45 minutes on a single charge, and watching a video in an MKV container with a resolution of 720p took 4 hours, which is not much. There is no particular point in playing such a heavy video on the Sony Xperia P, so we checked the operating time using the example of continuously viewing a file in an AVI container with a resolution of 720x400. The smartphone played this video until it was completely discharged for 5 hours. Continuous reading in the FBreader program at a medium brightness level lasted 6 hours. In all these indicators, the smartphone clearly lags behind the leaders. But the Sony Xperia P charges extremely quickly. Not only is the battery itself not large, but the charger here also has increased power. Full charging time is only 1.5 hours.

Prices

The average retail price of a device in Moscow at the time of reading the article in rubles can be found by moving the mouse to the price tag.

Bottom line

Summing up today's review, I would like, first of all, to note the positive shift that occurred in relation to the Sony Xperia S. It had a lot of technical flaws due to the fact that the device was finished and released to the market in a hurry. Here, all these shortcomings and outright absurdities have been eliminated, and if not for the artificial restrictions specifically imposed by marketers on the Sony Xperia P to create a visible “lag” behind the flagship, it remains to be seen which device could rightfully be called more advanced. All the characteristics of this device merge so organically.

As for competitors, here we have to state the fact that the smartphone, due to the same artificial limitations, is not very capable of attracting the interest of real technomaniacs. This device is more of a fashion device and it “plays” in the field where people are not too picky about performance characteristics. But with the appearance of the Sony Xperia P, everything is in order. Of the competitors in this sector, you can find few similar devices. Perhaps it’s worth paying attention to the middle “player” of the new trio of NTS - the One S model. It’s time to compare the Sony Xperia P with it. Its body is made using “space” processing technologies, and there is the same lack of memory expansion capabilities. Is it true, HTC One The S is still more expensive, but it has a larger screen and a much more capacious battery. But both new smartphones are similar in one thing: they combine organically selected characteristics and a very attractive appearance, which together creates a fairly strong emotional message that will attract glances and make you part with money.

As for money, at the moment the Sony Xperia P is sold only in the Svyaznoy chain of stores, and will be exclusively offered there until June. Therefore, its official price on the Russian market is now clearly defined: it is 19,990 rubles. Is this a lot or a little? Perhaps this price is too high - it’s worth waiting for the start of mass sales of the smartphone in other stores, then the price will gradually begin to decrease.

Sony always cares about its customers. In order for owners of smartphones and tablets of the Sony Xperia series to always after the release of software updates ( software) could receive it on their device, special tools and applications were developed that were included in proprietary program called "PC Companion". It also allows you to manage contacts, make backup, reset settings, restore the device to its factory state, and will even help in such a common case when the user has forgotten graphic key unlock screen.

Keep in mind that if you update or restore your Sony Xperia using PC Companion, you will end up with a like-new device. All data is deleted.

Instructions for updating/restoring the device

It should be noted that this process is not difficult, and you can handle it. You just need to carefully follow the prompts on the screen.

  1. If PC Companion is not yet installed on your computer, you need to download it from the official Sony website using this link. Then install.
  2. Launch the program and in its main window, pay attention to the “Support Zone” section. You need to click the “Start” button and wait a while until this tool loads.
  3. In the window that appears, under the “Updating phone/tablet software” section, click on the “Start” button.
  4. A window will appear with a message that it is impossible to find the phone/tablet. In it we are interested in the blue text “restoration...”. Click on it.
  5. Review the information about data loss and click Continue.
  6. Check the box that you agree to the deletion of personal data and click “Next”.
  7. At this stage, the preparation of the computer will begin. You need to wait a while.
  8. Study the recommendations below and check the box next to “I have read”, and then click “Continue”. Make sure your device's battery is well charged. The program recommends a minimum of 80% charge.
  9. Find and select your model.
  10. Carefully study the information provided and do everything as written.
  11. The automatic recovery process will start. At this stage, you must not turn off or disconnect the device. It’s better to put it aside altogether and wait for the process to complete.

Over the air update

If the above instructions allow you to carry out both a simple software version update and recovery, for example, when the user needs to remove a forgotten screen lock pattern, then below is a manual for exclusively updating the device. This is the easiest way - the so-called “over-the-air update” (OTA update).

  1. First method: connect your Sony Xperia to stable Wi-Fi networks, and the system will independently analyze the availability of fresh software.
  2. Second way: do everything manually. To do this, go to the settings menu, select “About phone”, and then “Software update”. Or, immediately open the Update Center utility. Follow the instructions on the screen.
