Ad blocker origin. UBlock Origin: ad blocker for Google Chrome browser

Updated. Available in the Chrome Web Store a new version uBlock Origin development build (v. 1.22.5.102) dated October 12, but there is no confirmation that the problems with Google have been resolved yet.

October 12– , . Since the beginning of 2019, quite a lot has been said about the fact that the development of uBlock Origin extensions may cease, and how these changes will affect all content blockers and other similar extensions.

In the summer, Google nevertheless announced its intention to make changes to the Web Request API, “in order to minimize the collection of data in Chrome by third-party extensions for blocking content and advertising.” However, the company relaxed the limit on the number of filtering rules to 150 thousand rules after facing serious criticism from users and developers.

But it looks like Google is back on track to limit ad blockers in Chrome.

Google refused to publish uBlock Origin for developers

Raymond Hill reports on his GitHub page that Google refused to allow him to publish a new version of the uBlock Origin extension for developers in the Chrome Web Store.

Developers upload new versions of extensions to Chrome Web Store for replacement existing versions, after which Google runs automatic scans of these tools, and can also analyze downloaded extensions manually before allowing or rejecting their publication in its own directory.

After posting the new version of the "uBlock Origin development build", the developer received a message from Google e-mail, that the extension violates one of the Chrome Web Store policies, which prohibits "combining unrelated functionality in extensions."

According to Raymond Hill, email does not contain any other information about the actual violation. Google is often criticized for this practice, but it continues to adhere to it in all areas of its business.

Hill, a seasoned developer by now, is under no illusion that Google will provide information about the denial:

There is no point in speculating one way or another on this topic, my experience with the Chrome Web Store in the past has taught me that we will never know why an extension was rejected for publication, Google never reveals the exact reason "why".

The developer version of the uBlock Origin extension is used by fewer users than the stable version, meaning the outage is not yet affecting the majority of users of the extension. The main problem with rejection is that the next stable version of the extension will be more or less identical to the rejected developer version.

While there is still a possibility that a new version of uBlock Origin will be published on the Chrome Web Store, it is more likely that Google will refuse to host it again and this could spell the end of uBlock Origin for Google Chrome.

Along with advertising, uBlock Origin also blocks notifications about possible cyber attacks. Unblock origin does not block Yandex Direct

UnBlock Origin for Yandex Browser: features, how to use, version for Android

Appearance problem annoying advertising on the Internet is known to all users, without exception, both on mobile and stationary platforms. UnBlock Origin for Yandex browser is an opportunity to get rid of annoying advertising on the network, ensuring comfortable surfing in full version browser and on Android. The extension is actively developing, the developers regularly release security updates and block various workarounds for displaying banners.

A little about the UnBlock extension

UnBlock Origin is the brainchild of developer Raymond Hill, the brainchild behind the plugin. Freely redistributable and comes with open source source code. The extension can be used on various platforms and browsers, in addition to Yandex browser, there are analogues in Opera, Chrome, Chromium, Firefox and Edge.

We paid attention to the expansion not only because of the high-quality blocking, but also the presence of positive reviews from technology sites. The main idea of the founder comes down to the possibility of filtering content and setting your own rules for selecting incoming traffic.

It's worth delving a little deeper into history. During the development of the project, Chris Adjudi was involved, with whom Raymond did not see eye-to-eye ideologically and they had to split up. The pure version of unBlock for the Yandex browser was left to Chris, and the founder is in charge of the Origin version. uBlock is an undeveloped project, latest version was released back in 2015, and Origin is supported and regularly updated.

It is important to remember that the ublock.org website belongs to Chris Adjudi, all donations through it will not be sent to the developer of the modern version.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the advantages of the plugin:
  • Performance. Technology sites, together with users, conducted a performance test (back in 2015), which showed a significant reduction in the required resources for the addon to work. Of the ten extensions examined, uBlock Origin uses resources most economically. To achieve this result, a special approach was used - checking the necessary styles for the page and cutting off other elements. The plugin does not take a standard style sheet as a basis, but immediately defines filters and connects them;
  • Ease of use. The add-on includes built-in support for syntax from the popular AdBlock Plus and efficient filtering tables are loaded by default. Immediately after installation, the extension starts working without requiring any mandatory settings, but this option is available;
  • Additional functions. Supports tracking protection, prevents loading sites that are on the Malware or Anti-Phishing list. Supports dynamic blocking of scripts and frames, there is a function manual removal elements from websites. We'll look at the function in more detail later;
  • Full protection from advertising. The extension has 4 filter lists by default: EasyList, EasyPrivacy, Malware sites, ad server blocking list from Peter Lowe;
  • Eat complete guide on the use and compilation of block lists.

To assess the presence of shortcomings, it is enough to study other proposals in the field of ad blocking. According to the results of use, the extension is not inferior in its ability to block third-party banners to the popular AdBlock and AdGuard, but remains a faster option. Everything you need is here additional functions, there are no restrictions, the plugin is constantly being developed, but does not work in mobile version Yandex browser. With high pickiness, the lack of Russian-speaking management can be called a disadvantage.

The installation process occurs in the standard way:

Along with advertising, uBlock Origin also blocks notifications about possible cyber attacks

Ad blockers have become very popular over the past few years due to the increase in the volume of advertising content placed on websites. But as it turns out, such products are also not without flaws. Experts were able to discover an interesting feature of one of the most popular ad blockers, which can pose a danger to users.

The problem was discovered by specialist Scott Helme. He studies security issues of various software products and other tools, including those used in browsers. This time, the ad blocker uBlock Origin came into view. It is very popular among users, so the problem described by Scott is relevant and very serious.

The fact is that when uBlock Origin is activated in any of the popular browsers, not only advertising content is blocked, but also the CSP tool, which is responsible for the content protection policy and prevents the introduction of malicious JavaScript code and XSS attacks.

The main task of the Content security policy is to send notifications to site administrators that an attack attempt has been made on their resource.

CSP blocking in popular browsers such as Chrome and Firefox does not always happen. For example, it applies if any of the scripts related to user privacy are running and running on the page. It could even be a Google Analytics script.

It is not so easy to notice this blocker function. Hemle came across it completely by accident when he discovered that more than one report of attempted attacks on his site was not being sent. As it turned out later, the ad blocker was to blame.

After a detailed study of the problem, it became clear that browsers in which uBlock Origin is activated simply do not send warnings to administrators. It turns out that developers may not even realize that someone else has attempted to crack the code. In this case, administrators will not even know if their resource is compromised.

According to one of the plugin developers, Raymond Hill, if the user does not agree with this blocker policy, he can easily change it, although he will have to do it manually. To do this, you need to add the required script to the extension's exclusion list. After this, CSP reports will start sending again.

Helme is sure that this feature in the ad blocking extension is not needed at all, but Hill disagreed with his opinion. He believes that CSP reports can pose a threat to users, since reports with all the data are sent to a third-party server. He called these reports a simple marketing ploy that helps site owners customize their resources, but does not in any way help solve user problems.

A real debate flared up around this topic, which is still ongoing. There were supporters of both sides. But during this dispute, Hill said that this issue should be thoroughly studied. He promised to look into this and consider blocking not all CSP reports, but only those that pose a serious threat to user privacy.

uBlock Origin – Add-ons for Firefox

µBlock is an efficient blocker: it uses less random access memory and uses less CPU while using more filters than other popular blockers.

An illustrated overview of its effectiveness: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/uBlock-vs.-ABP:-efficiency-compared

Usage: Click the large "Enable" button in the drop-down window to enable or disable uBlock for the current site. This only applies to the current site, not all sites.

Being flexible, it is more than just an "ad blocker": it can also read and create filters from host files.

By default, the following filter lists will be loaded and applied:

Other lists are also available to choose from:

Fan Improved Tracking List- Dan Pollock Host File- Advertising and Tracking Servers hpHosts- MVPS HOSTS- Spam404- Etc.

Of course, the more filters, the higher the memory usage. However, even after adding three additional lists, uBlock₀ still consumes less memory than other popular blockers.

Also keep in mind that some of these lists have a high probability of breaking a website, especially those created from host files.

Without preset filter lists, this extension is nothing. So if you really want to contribute, think about the people who diligently maintain the filter lists provided for you to use for free.

uBlock is another extension for blocking ads on visited sites. According to statements by Raymond Hill, the project developer, and comments from some users, uBlock differs from its analogues in that it consumes less memory, processor resources and is generally more lightweight. For example, here are memory consumption statistics from the authors:

But here are more impressive CPU load data:

Things got weird this month when a new feature popped up in the Chrome Web Store. alternative extension with the same name. At the same time, the original extension was first renamed uBlock₀, then completely disappeared from the catalog and only after some time returned under the name uBlock Origin.

It is understandable why, in this situation, many users began to ask questions and even accuse the newer extension of fraud. But what really happened?

Transfer of rights

Raymond Hill (gorhill), the original developer of uBlock, commented on the situation some time later.

This is how however more and more of my time was spent, and no doubt it would just become worst as uBlock gained popularity. So I was getting sucked into something I never intended to do.

The uBlock project was created by Raymond as a hobby and mainly just for himself. He wanted to create an extension that would suit his needs. And no more. What happened was that uBlock became extremely popular (almost 1 million users in the Chrome Web Store). He had neither the time nor the desire to support and develop the extension in accordance with user requirements. Therefore, he decided to transfer the rights to the name "uBlock" and the main GitHub repository to Chris Aleody.

At the same time, Raymond will continue to support the now fork of the main branch. This fork, in fact, is the latest version of its extension, which will mainly receive fixes. New functions will be added only when he himself feels the need for them. And what's most interesting. This fork will continue to live in the Chrome Web Store at the old address and with the entire current user base. Only its name has changed: now it is uBlock Origin. While Chris had to publish a second extension, which gained about 55 thousand users in a month.

The new uBlock (from Chris) and the old uBlock Origin (from Raymond) will continue to exist and develop independently of each other. Although at the moment these extensions are almost copies, in the near future their paths, interface and capabilities may diverge greatly.

What about removal from the Web Store?

At the very beginning, we wrote that the original extension disappeared from the Chrome Web Store catalog, and then returned under a new name. Some time after the publication of the new uBlock extension from Chris, the old one was removed from the catalog by moderators, allegedly due to violations of the service rules.

At the same time, Raymond did not receive any notifications from Google, and even after contacting support, no one could explain to him the reason, citing the fact that all the details were described in the letter that he was supposed to receive (but did not receive). Let's leave out the quality of Chrome Web Store moderation (you understand everything yourself...).

The Chrome store is ridiculous. They should just be straightforward and state the reason of why the extension is taken down right in the dashboard. What's so difficult about this?

The author never received a response to his request, but tried to send uBlock for moderation again, this time changing the name to uBlock Origin and the icon (at the very beginning of our post you can see the new icon). And they missed the expansion.

Recently, a little drama broke out between the old and new authors of the expansion. The point is very simple. Chris wrote on the extension page that it is "current uBlock project development by Chris". Raymond was offended by this, believing that Chris thus wanted to appropriate all the laurels for himself. True, they later made peace. Chris even posted an apology video. And the authorship signature was replaced with “Project currently managed by Chris”.

Ok, so where and how to download uBlock?

If you want to continue to use the original extension, which will most likely develop exclusively in the direction of corrections, then install uBlock Origin.

If you are interested in new opportunities, and you want to become part of the community and propose your ideas, then it is better to pay attention to the new uBlock.

It's time to take stock. uBlock Origin continues to live with a new large audience, but uBlock seems to have died. Users ran after the real author.
