Design, construction

Jabra is soon releasing a very interesting product called Elite Sport, two miniature in-ear headphones with protection from water and sweat. I’m really looking forward to it going on sale and will be happy to prepare a review.

But today we will talk about the basic model called Jabra Halo Smart, in my opinion, this is an ideal urban headset, suitable for moving around using public transport, walking, using in the office or other places. Regarding public transport, I think my point is clear - there are no wires sticking out here. About the office too - you can not disturb others while listening to music, and answer calls without holding the phone in your hands. Well, for walking, Halo Smart is suitable for the reason that it weighs little, does not interfere, and will help you listen to podcasts or some mixes. The ideal smartphone companion? I'll try to find the flaws.

The headset comes in attractive packaging with typical Jabra design, and includes only the essentials - the short USB cable could be longer, and there are three sizes of ear tips. The device is available in three colors: blue, red and black.

The form factor is typical of many modern headsets, a matte plastic headband, two sections of flat cable with miniature headphones. There are no logos or any flashy designations; in general, the headset looks simple and cool, I personally really liked the design. On the right “leg” of the headband there are three headset control buttons, these are volume control and a multifunction button, it is responsible for turning on, answering a call, starting and stopping playback. When you turn on the Jabra Halo Smart for the first time, it automatically goes into pairing mode, all you have to do is find it using your smartphone or other device. There were no problems connecting to the iPhone 7 and Sony Xperia XZ. The accessory works perfectly with two gadgets at once, which has been tested. The headset charge indicator appears on the smartphone screen.

On the left leg there is a button for using the voice assistant; if you press this small microphone, Siri or the Google service is immediately launched. The microphone is located right there, a small area under the perforated plastic - the quality of speech transmission is not bad, in noisy conditions you can move the “leg” closer to your mouth or tilt your head. In my opinion, it would be optimal to place the microphone on the cable, but Jabra apparently had its own reasons.

To activate pairing mode, you need to press and hold the multi-function button and Jabra Halo Smart will notify you when it is ready to pair. And then you will probably feel a vibration in the headband - it didn’t seem to you that when various events happen, it really vibrates, such an “indication” is quite convenient and good in the city, when the smartphone is somewhere under your clothes.

There are magnets on the headphones, you can “glue them” so that they don’t dangle, another pair of magnets is in the headband, you apply the cups, and you get a kind of walking position. Such concern undoubtedly pleases.

The Jabra Halo Smart case is protected from wind and water, so it says on the official website, but in fact we are talking about basic protection against drops, nothing more. There is not a word in official sources about use for sports purposes, but I can fully recommend the gadget for such tasks. The headband does not tend to fall off the neck, sits firmly, and does not fall off even during jumps. The wiring doesn't interfere; if you pick up the tips, you won't feel the headphones - in general, it's very good for the gym. By default, the smallest nozzles are installed, I advise you to change them and spend five minutes selecting them, this will affect both comfort and sound.

Working hours

For charging, a regular microUSB connector is used, hidden under a plug on the headband, the stated operating time is about 17 (!) hours, of course, this is very cool, but how does it all happen in real life? Surprisingly, this is exactly what happens. After five days of use for one and a half to two hours a day, the headset was discharged only by Friday evening. It took about three hours to charge, I used an external battery, and then went back into battle (for a week). Long operating time is a very good feature of the product.

Music and sound

It looks like these are headphones, but I personally am quite satisfied with the quality of speech transmission; you can communicate calmly if there is no noise around you. The voice of the interlocutor has natural notes, in general, everything is pleasant here.

As for music, I didn’t feel any super miracles with the basic player of the iPhone 7 Plus, but I won’t find fault with the quality either. For a Bluetooth headset for this money, everything is very good. If you want more bass, use an equalizer (bass is a question here), but in general, Halo Smart is more suitable for instrumental, pop music; for electronic music, it’s better to choose something else.

But, I must say, unpretentious users will be very pleased.

conclusions

At retail Jabra Halo Smart costs about 5,000 rubles, I liked the product:

  • Nice design.
  • Long battery life.
  • There are magnets for attaching headphones and vibration for notifications.
  • Works with two devices at once.
  • Good voice quality and musical capabilities (for your money).
  • The price is a huge plus.

Cons - for me there is not enough sound, but, again, for most people the Jabra Halo Smart will be a faithful companion in the city.

For several years now, I have been closely following the development of the audio component of modern devices. Today, Apple began to abandon 3.5 mm. connectors followed suit, and many Chinese manufacturers took this step. Moreover, the latest models of Hi-Fi players also began to support wireless interfaces. It's true, we live in a time when wires are becoming a thing of the past. And even the most seasoned supporters of connectors will agree that there are many situations in which wires frankly get in the way, and ultra-high sound quality fades into the background, giving way to convenience. Playing sports, listening to music on public transport, and simply having warm clothes in the winter - here wireless sound definitely wins. As you probably already guessed, today we will talk about a new wireless headset from Denmark - Jabra Halo Smart.

UNPACKING AND EQUIPMENT

The packaging of the Jabra Halo Smart is sophisticated and stylish. On the front there is a large photo in which we see the headset “in action”, so we can immediately understand whether this model is suitable for us or is it worth looking in the direction of a different form factor. It also states that the headset is suitable for calls and music and produces amazing sound. Yes, there are no “Chinese promises” like Hi-Fi or Lossless. Modest and very correct - “Amazing Sound”. I noticed this immediately and consider such a move worthy of respect.

On the back and sides there is information about the main characteristics of the device and a smartphone application that expands the functionality of the device.

The box opens like a book. I’m sure that Jabra employees put a lot of thought into the design of the box, but I personally didn’t immediately understand how to remove the headphones from the packaging. I think a simple “open here” tag would have made the first impression of the product much more complete. In my case, the box was slightly damaged when I tried to remove the headset.

The kit included a nice fabric carrying case, made in branded black and yellow colors, a MicroUSB charging cable, a package of documentation, including in the correct Russian language, a warranty card and three pairs of additional ear pads, completely different from those already included on the device .

The additional attachments are very good, but they turned out to be small for my ears, so I will note another advantage of the headset - the versatility of the ear pads. My Sony and Vsonic headphone tips fit perfectly, so regardless of the characteristics of your ear canal, you can always find suitable ear pads.

DESIGN/ERGONOMICS

The Jabra Halo Smart wireless headset is made entirely of plastic and consists of an anatomically shaped neck arch, noodle wire and the cups themselves.

On the back of the arc there is a manufacturer's logo, on the bottom there is service information and a hermetically sealed MiroUSB slot for charging the device.

One of the features of the Jabra Halo Smart is the flexible neckband, which allows you to comfortably adjust the headset to almost any neck. Frankly speaking, I have a rather massive neck and I was a little worried about this, but as it turned out, it was in vain. The arch fits perfectly, and due to its flexibility and memory effect, it is securely fixed on the neck even when playing active sports.

At first glance, the very presence of the arc seems unjustified, but there is one thing. The design of the arc itself hides a very capacious 230mAh battery, which allows you to talk for 17 hours or enjoy music for about 15. In standby mode, the headset can generally work for 22 days and this is really very important. During testing, I often frankly forgot to turn off the headset and the next day, when getting ready to run errands, I automatically took it with me, not caring at all about charging. And in this mode, the Jabra Halo Smart worked for me for more than a week, and the battery was not yet discharged, simply for fear of an unplanned end of charge. And yes, the headset works for a really long time.

The second thing I was able to check was the presence of IP54 protection. The neck part of the headset was successfully immersed in water, the headset itself was used in the rain and despite all this, it still works amazingly.

On the right side of the arc there are three rubberized buttons with a sharp, pleasant click: volume up (next track), volume down (previous track) and a call answer button (play/pause).

On the left side there is a single button responsible for calling the assistant; for iOS it is Siri, for Android it is Google Now. I am sure there will be business people who will appreciate the ability to search the Internet “on the go” and issue commands to the system.

Next to the button is a microphone with wind and water protection. Everything said in the characteristics is true - talking in a strong wind is almost as easy as in complete calm. The call quality is slightly lower than that of music, but quite sufficient for telephone conversations.

On the back of the arc there is an LED indicator that takes on three colors: red (off), blue (search for a smartphone) and green (on). To turn the device on or off, you need to hold down the answer button, after which you can feel vibration in the neck arch and hear a message in English about the status of the connection to the smartphone. The vibration is more like jolting - a very pleasant tactile addition to the audio functionality.

Another surprise from Jabra is the presence of two pairs of magnets for attaching the cups. The first pair is hidden in the arc and allows you to fasten the cups to it, the second pair allows you to fasten the cups to each other, forming some kind of chain.

This is, in my opinion, the most convenient way to attach the cups when the headset is not in use. In addition, the process of fastening and unfastening itself works as an answer to a call and a call reset, depending on the situation. How convenient is this? After the conversation, just connect the cups with magnets and be sure that the reset will happen. This can be very useful in the case of curious people who, after the call, continue to persistently listen to something.

The cups also have an anatomical shape and fit comfortably inside the ear, while the sound insulation is excellent.

On the front part you can see two compensation holes; the sound guides are covered with a metal mesh. Driver diameter - 10 mm.

INTERFACE

To expand the functionality of the headset, Jabra has released additional software, consisting of a service part, Jabra Service, and an interface part, Jabra Assist.

The point of this application is to add the ability to read messages and letters directly while using the headset. By default, the Pico TTS voice engine is used, but it does not support the Russian language, so I installed the Google Speech Synthesizer application on my Android smartphone.

SOUND

Speaking about the sound of Jabra Halo Smart, it is necessary to immediately clarify the absence of the Apt-X codec, for the so-called Lossless Bluetooth. Testing was carried out on a Meizu MX4 Pro smartphone with a top-end SABER ES9018K2M DAC and a TI OPA1612 professional amplifier. In my case, during a Bluetooth connection, the signal was processed by the AAC codec - this is a completely universal codec with a quality superior to the currently popular MP3, however, I consider it unnecessary to download Flac and APE for listening to the Jabra Halo Smart.

Subbass is deep, contoured, leaving the main rhythmic position for the bass. The bass is a little raised, but it is done truly exquisitely - there is just enough of it as needed. I am sure that all lovers of proper bass will be satisfied with it. Mids and highs are in their place. The detailing for a bluetooth headset with the AAC codec is good. I would rate the overall sound quality of the Jabra Halo Smart as very good.
