Why did I choose an iPhone?
This is a good question that many people ask me. Firstly, I am much more familiar with the iPhone than with other smartphones. I use it myself.

Secondly, there are a lot of Apple-related things in China. Not only phones, but also various parts, spare parts, cases and much more. iPhone is very popular.

And due to the fact that the “filling” for the iPhone can be easily found in city stores and markets, it is easier to assemble.

I also thought that creating an iPhone would be a little more interesting, since the brand is recognized worldwide.

I had no experience before this. This is the first time I'm doing something like this. I'll say more. This is the first time I've seen the "insides" of a phone (laughs).

The biggest difficulty I encountered was my poor knowledge of Chinese (laughs).

It was no less difficult to find all the parts to assemble the phone, to understand what exactly needed to be bought and where.

Hard to find processor. You can't just buy a processor similar to the one in the iPhone. The only one possible way- this means buying, disassembling an iPhone and removing its processor.

How I dealt with the processor is a separate story, which I may talk about in the next video.

Another difficulty is that I wanted to create my own motherboard, technical details can be seen in the video.

I spent about $1000 on all this. Most of the amount was spent on parts and tools. But now, having learned from experience, if I want to repeat the experiment, I will spend $300.

The entire process, from decision making to video presentation, took five months. But the real work - assembling the phone and recording the video - lasted about two months.

My own iPhone and the Apple iPhone are almost the same. I now have two phones and if I show them to you, you won't see the difference.

Of course, the Apple iPhone has a warranty period and was assembled by people more experienced in this field. Therefore we can say that it is better.

I have no intention of opening my own business or continuing to collect phones. It was just an experiment.

Following the example of David Mellis, who designed a telephone from plywood, British circuit engineer James Newman decided to create his own computer from scratch. He assembled the Megaprocessor machine from seven stands, two meters high, weighing more than 500 kilograms. It took Newman £40,000 and four years of his life to create a computer with 40,000 transistors and 10,000 LEDs.

“The machine on your desk may be a million times better than the one I built, but mine is much more beautiful. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to sell my project, but I would like Megaprocessor to be presented as an exhibit in a museum or educational institution,” Newman said about his development.

This computer is more reminiscent of a mid-20th century computer than a modern PC. Newman created a 16-bit processor with a frequency of 20 kilohertz especially for him. The entire computer is divided into specific modules assembled from separate boards. Several modules are assembled into a single cabinet measuring one and a half by two meters. To demonstrate the capabilities of the “megaprocessor,” the Tetris game was chosen, running on a huge LED display with a resolution of 32 by 64 pixel LEDs. The assembly process was not without problems. Newman installed about a dozen transistors incorrectly, and searching for them was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Similar errors arose when connecting connectors, of which there were more than 500. Other difficulties included skewed wires, not fully inserted cables, shorts to the case, defects in transistors, and much more. If you add it all up, it becomes clear why it took so long to create a “megaprocessor”.

According to Newman, his brainchild is ideal for educational purposes, to show people what happens inside the gadgets they use. After all, the computer was originally created to visualize the computing process. When asked why he spent so much effort, time and resources on Megaprocessor, Newman answered rather matter-of-factly: “I just wanted it that way.”
