Where to find a network adapter on Windows 7. Driver for a network adapter - detailed installation instructions

Hello, friends! If you need to know, how to install drivers to your computer, then you have come to the right place. Over the three years of the site’s existence, we have written twenty articles for you, from which you can learn how to accurately identify what is installed in a system unit or laptop unknown device by ID equipment code and install drivers on it from the manufacturer’s website, for example, to: , video card and , , , and so on. In this same article, we want to show you how to install drivers automatically using the most operating system Windows 7, 8 and using special services: DriverPack Solution and ma-config.com. You'll also learn how to install or update drivers if you don't have internet, but to do this you'll have to take a few preliminary steps.

To make it more interesting, we will install drivers on a laptop and two system units that my colleagues brought to me. After installing the operating system, some drivers were not installed on them and you and I will need to install them. For example, the driver for some “Basic” did not install on the laptop system device", they couldn’t find the driver even on the Internet using the ID equipment code. So, let's go! At the beginning of the article we always publish several of your letters.

How to install drivers

Got the question! There are situations when finding drivers for a specific device is quite difficult. For example, take the case of our reader. Usually, drivers for all laptop devices are available on the website of that same laptop, but if the drivers are not there, what should you do? This happens, of course, quite rarely, but it does happen.
As you understand, all components for a laptop are supplied by certain manufacturers, and each such manufacturer has an official website, on which drivers for Windows XP, Windows 7 or Windows 8 are probably posted. Another question is that searching for all these sites for an ordinary user is a long and tedious task, yes and not all of them are in Russian. A good thing, for such a case, is to run special program and it will find all drivers not installed in Windows.
There are not so many good and free programs that can detect the missing drivers in the operating system, and even install them. In my articles I often mention the DriverPack Solution program. The ma-config.com automatic driver installation service is also good and we’ll talk about it today too. But first of all, to install the missing driver, you need to use the capabilities of the operating system itself Windows systems 7, Windows 8. How? Now you'll find out! Let's look at some good ways automatic driver installation.

How to install drivers automatically using Windows itself

One friend brought me a laptop that had one device without a driver; together with his friends, he searched the entire Internet and could not find this ill-fated driver. Finally, everyone decided that the device was faulty, so the driver could not be installed on it, so the laptop came to me.

Modern operating systems from Microsoft Windows 7, 8 contain a huge database of drivers for great amount various devices. Let's use this database to help us. Before starting work, I recommend creating a system restore point.
Let's use the "Device Installation Options" tool, with its help you can install the missing driver into the operating system. Some experienced users they don’t use it, believing that the drivers “from Microsoft” are stripped down, maybe this is true, but it’s better than nothing and the device will work with them, and not be an eyesore with a yellow circle in the Device Manager.
Usually, the “Device Installation Options” tool is disabled for users, let’s enable it and see how it works. To do this, you just need to switch the “Device Installation Options” tool to “Automatic mode” in the “Control Panel”.
In Windows 7 Start->Devices and Printers.

In Windows 8, right-click in the left corner and also select “Control Panel”

Right-click on the name of your computer and select "Device Installation Options"

Check the box “Yes, do this automatically (recommended)” and Save.

If the operating system contains a device without drivers, then almost immediately an automatic search and installation of drivers for these devices will occur.

But sometimes the system will not be able to do this and you will see the following warning: “The driver could not be found”

Or you can simply go to Device Manager, right-click on the device without drivers and select “Update Drivers” and it will search for drivers for the device.

How to install drivers automatically using a disk or DriverPack Solution program Official site automatic search drivers DriverPack Solution is located at http://drp.su/ru/download.htm

On this site you can download four tools for searching for drivers: Lite, DVD, Full, Configurator. Let's take a brief look at all of them, then choose what you need. The Lite version will be installed on your computer. The DVD version will be downloaded to you as an ISO image, which you will need to burn to DVD disc. Version Full can find almost all the drivers you need, works without installation and you can carry it on a flash drive.

The first thing that is offered is the Lite program. Let's use it to find a driver for our "Main system device"

It is written in great detail how to work with Lite version, in our article “How to install a driver for a webcam” And here I will say a little shorter. Download it

How to install drivers using DriverPack Solution Full

Using this package, we will install an unstable driver for the Intel Management Engine Interface, which is built into the motherboard chipset and performs important monitoring processes. In Device Manager you will notice that opposite it there is a yellow triangle with exclamation point, signaling that our device is not working properly.

Of course, this driver can be downloaded from the official Intel website, which is what we did in the article “How to install drivers on motherboard"(link to article above). In the same article we will install this driver using the DriverPack Solution Full program

DriverPack Solution Full Contains a huge driver package, I carry it on a flash drive just in case. For example, friends will ask you to reinstall the operating system and after reinstallation it turns out that the driver was not installed on the network card, so you won’t be able to access the Internet and you won’t be able to download the driver, so you can successfully install the driver on your network card using the DriverPack Solution Full build. which is on your flash drive.
How to work with this version is described in great detail in the article “How to download and install drivers on the motherboard.” Here I will say the main thing.

Article on this topic:

The Internet is a publicly accessible thing, but without preliminary settings and manipulations it is inaccessible. The fact is that in order to activate the Internet on a computer (no matter what operating system you are dealing with), you need to have the appropriate drivers, which, as a rule, are missing in Windows that has just been installed. Now we will talk about what drivers are and how to correctly install network drivers so that the Internet works on your PC.

A little theory

First, let's figure out why drivers for an Internet connection are so important?

A driver is a set of microprograms that provide communication between the hardware components of the computer (the parts that are inside system unit) and software (everything related to programs, applications, utilities, etc.).

For active connection The Internet requires the presence of network drivers, which must be “tailored” to your network card and with the help of which the computer will be able to recognize the appropriate commands, lines of network code, for interaction between the PC and the global Internet.

How do I know which drivers to download?

Today there are a considerable number of network card developers who release specific network drivers for their products. Of course, as you might have guessed, drivers for one board will not be suitable for a board of another brand.

To do this, so as not to download everything and do something stupid, let's figure out how to find out what network card is installed on your computer?

Method 1

    1. Click on My computer right click and select Properties.
    2. In the list on the left, click on device Manager.

    1. Find the tab Network adapters and open it.

    1. After expanding this tab, you will see the name of the network card you are using.

Method 2

    1. Press the key combination Win+R on keyboard.

    1. A line will open in front of you Execute, in which you need to enter the following command: cmd. Click OK.

    1. In the opened command line enter the following: ipconfig/all. Click Enter.

    1. Find the item Description. This will be the name of your network card.

Downloading the necessary drivers on the Internet

Now that you know the name of the network card, you can begin installing drivers. To do this, enter this name in a search engine, then go to the official website of the developer of this board. On this site you can get current version network drivers.

Installation network adapter to the computer

A network adapter is a device responsible for transmitting and receiving packets, that is, it is a “window” through which the computer interacts with other computers and devices on the network.

As you already know, network adapters can be external or internal, integrated into the motherboard.

External network cards are made in the form of expansion cards that are inserted into a slot on the motherboard (the most common), or devices that are connected to a USB port.

PCI slot is the main slot used to connect devices of this kind. It can operate at frequencies of 33 and 66 MHz and according to the specifications in a wide range of speeds from 132 MB / s to 528 MB / s, which is enough to work on any network, be it 10 Mbps or 1000 Mbps.

Recently, almost all motherboards have an integrated network adapter, which is quite convenient and also allows you to save some money. However, most of the built-in network cards are of a low level, which does not allow them to be used for organizing the operation of servers and other functional computers. Therefore, many system administrators prefer to install an additional network card. In addition, an additional network card is simply necessary in various types of servers.

The speed of the adapter depends on the network equipment that is used to organize the network. If it operates at a speed of 100 Mbit/s, then there is no point in purchasing network cards that operate at a speed of 10 Mbit/s. As a last resort, you can use an adapter that operates at both 10 Mbit/s and 100 Mbit/s.

You should be very careful when choosing wireless network adapters - otherwise you can end up with a network in which half of the computers will not be able to communicate with the other half.

If you use a coaxial cable, then you must also take into account that the network cards must have a BNC connector. As a rule, in this case, combined network cards with two connectors are purchased: BNC and RJ-45. Such cards usually operate at speeds of 10 Mbit/s and 100 Mbit/s.

For a wired twisted-pair network, it is best to purchase network adapters that are designed to operate on a 100Base-TX or even Gigabit Ethernet network.

To avoid unpleasant moments when working on the network, it is better to use wireless network adapters of the same standard, for example IEEE 802.11b. Even better - buy equipment IEEE standard 802.11g or IEEE 802.11n, which is compatible with all previous wireless standards.

To install the network adapter into a computer, you need to remove the shaped cover (or left side panel) covering it from the system unit by unscrewing several screws from the back of the case.

Having selected the PCI slot in which you plan to install the network card, you should unscrew or break off the corresponding strip in the rear wall of the case (Fig. 13.2).

Rice. 13.2. Unscrew the plug

Attention!

Before unscrewing or even breaking out the bracket, attach the network card to the PCI slot to determine which of the slots on the rear wall of the case needs to be freed. Network cards can be either left-handed, when the card itself is located to the left of the slot, or right-handed. This determines which of the strips needs to be removed.

After this, take the network card in your hands so that the metal strip is turned in the direction opposite to the computer, and by gently but persistently pressing the card on both sides, insert it into the slot (Fig. 13.3).

Rice. 13.3. Insert the network adapter

After shaking the board in different directions, check the tightness of the contacts and, if necessary, press again on both sides so that the metal strip to which the network board is screwed is pressed tightly against the chassis of the case. Then attach the metal strip to the chassis using a screw.

Now you can put the housing cover back and connect the cable to the network card output (Fig. 13.4) or (when using a wireless network card) screw on the antenna.

Rice. 13.4. Installation is complete, fasten the antenna

After installing the network adapter, you can turn on the computer and begin installing and configuring drivers.

Installing the network adapter driver

After installing the network card into the motherboard slot, you need to load its driver. Operating systems such as Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003 have a large database of drivers for various devices, so the network card will most likely be detected automatically and the system will install it itself. network drivers. If the system does not recognize the type of network card, you will have to install the driver yourself.

After connecting a new device to the computer and loading the operating system, after a few seconds a message will appear in the notification area stating that new hardware has been found (Fig. 13.5). After a few more seconds, if the required driver is found in the driver database, a message will be displayed that the device is installed and ready to use.

Rice. 13.5. Message about new device detection

It is possible that some kind of failure occurs during installation and the system cannot install the network card correctly, which will also be indicated in the corresponding message.

In any case, you can check the status of the network card using Device Manager. You should right-click on the My Computer icon and select Properties in the context menu that appears - the System Properties window will open, containing several tabs with various help information. Some of them can also be used to call certain system utilities. In particular, you can run automatic update operating system components via the Internet or system recovery and disk monitoring.

Let's go to the Equipment tab (Fig. 13.6), which contains commands designed to work with existing equipment. It allows you not only to view information about installed devices and drivers, but also to install new equipment and configure profiles for different system configurations.

Rice. 13.6. Hardware tab

We are interested in information about installed devices, so click the Device Manager button. In the window that opens, you can see information about any device installed in the system by selecting the appropriate item and double-clicking on the name of the desired device (Fig. 13.7).

Rice. 13.7. Device Manager window. Network card installed

If the system could not find the network card after turning on the computer or, having found it, did not install required driver, then you will have to do it manually.

To add a new device to the system, it is convenient to use the Add Hardware Wizard, for which you should run the Start? Control panel and in the window that opens, double-click on the Hardware Installation icon - the Hardware Installation Wizard window will open (Fig. 13.8).

Rice. 13.8. Hardware Installation Wizard

The principle of operation here is the same as in previous versions operating system. After reading useful information about what the wizard can do and what it is intended for, click Next - the wizard will analyze the system and collect information about connected devices. This will take some time, so you will have to wait a little, after which the wizard will ask what stage of connection the device is at (Fig. 13.9).

Rice. 13.9. Select the device connection stage

Two answer options are offered, but you must select the first one - Yes, the device is already connected - and click Next - a window will open (Fig. 13.10) containing a list of detected devices, in which your device should be under the question mark. If it is not there, then you should go to the very end of the list, mark the Add a new device option and click Next.

Rice. 13.10. Looking for a device in the list

Note

If you select the option No, the device is not yet connected (see Fig. 13.9), then in the next window the wizard will ask you to turn off the computer, install the device and run the Add Device Wizard again.

As usual, the wizard will offer two options for further actions:

Search and automatic installation hardware (recommended) – this mechanism starts immediately after loading the operating system, so if the initial installation of the network card did not produce any results, then a repeated search will most likely not help;

Installing equipment manually selected from the list - it is assumed that the user knows where the device driver is located and will indicate its location himself (Fig. 13.11).

Rice. 13.11. Selecting an installation option

If you still decide to use the first option, then set the switch to the required position and click Next. Do not forget to install the disk that comes with the network card into the drive.

The wizard will begin searching for the device, which may take quite a long time. If the search does not produce results, a corresponding window will appear asking you to search for the device driver manually. If the search is successful, a window will appear with a message that the network card driver is installed.

To start searching for a driver manually, you first need to indicate in the window that appears (Fig. 13.12) that a network card will be installed by selecting Network Cards and clicking Next.

Rice. 13.12. Choose desired type equipment - network card

By default, the wizard prompts you to select a driver from its own driver database, indicating the manufacturer of the network card and its name. Since this option has no effect (unsuccessful search), using the Install from disk button (Fig. 13.13), specify the path to the driver location on the disk installed in the drive or another location known to you.

Rice. 13.13. Specify the manufacturer and name of the network card or use the Install from disk button

After confirming the selection, the wizard, having detected suitable driver, will start copying necessary files. At the same time, it will check for a digital signature on the network card driver in order to ensure maximum protection of the operating system from unverified (not previously tested) software, in our case, the network card driver.

If the driver does not have a signature, that is, the network card driver can somehow disrupt the operation of the system, the installation wizard will inform you about this and offer you a choice of further actions: continue installing the driver or install another one. If you are sure that the driver is functional, then continue with the installation, otherwise you will have to search new driver.

Upon completion of the installation, the wizard will display the resulting window with a message about this (Fig. 13.14).

Rice. 13.14. Driver installation complete

To ensure that the network card is already installed, check by launching Device Manager as described earlier.

It should be noted that wireless equipment is very rarely installed automatically. Therefore, you will have to perform similar actions for each wireless device. The only thing that can make the task easier is a more or less intelligent installation program, which should be on the CD that comes with the device.

Hello friends! I noticed that many readers of my blog have problems that arise with connecting to Wi-Fi networks, or working via Wi-Fi, in many cases arising due to problems in the operation of the wireless network adapter. And it's not always your fault Wi-Fi router, which everyone immediately begins to reconfigure several times :).

Let's say a few words about what it is wireless network adapter (in the device manager, or in the driver description, it will most likely be labeled as Wireless Network Adapter). This is a device that actually connects your computer, laptop, netbook, etc. to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Well, I explained it, but I think you understand what I mean :).

If you have a laptop or netbook, then most likely it already has a built-in wireless network adapter (unless the device is old, or even very old). If it's normal desktop computer, then the wireless network adapter (Wi-Fi adapter) is connected separately. There could be, for example, a USB adapter such as, or an internal PCI adapter. You can read more about these devices in the article.

It doesn’t matter what Wi-Fi adapter you have and on what device. We need it to work stably and not have any problems with connecting and working with Wi-Fi networks. And in order for everything to work well, you need to immediately install the necessary driver for the wireless adapter, and if strange problems appear when working with wireless networks, and you have determined that the problem is most likely in the device (laptop, computer, etc.), then you need to try updating or completely reinstalling the driver for the Wireless Network Adapter. What are we going to do now?

How to check if the driver is installed on Wi-Fi?

If, after installing an operating system, say Windows 7, Wi-Fi does not work on a laptop or other device, then most likely the operating system simply failed to select and install a driver for your network adapter. I don’t remember exactly, but it seems to me that I have not yet seen a case where Windows 7 itself installed the driver on the Wireless Network Adapter.

Typically this driver (like many others) you need to install from the driver disk that comes with the laptop (netbook, USB adapter, PCI adapter, etc.), or download the driver from the website of the manufacturer of the same laptop.

In order to check whether the driver is installed on the wireless adapter, you need to go to Device Manager and see if it is there.

Right click on My computer (or open My Computer and click on the empty area), select Properties.

On the right click on "Device Manager".

If you did not find such devices there, then you need to install the driver. You can install it from the disk that comes with the kit, or download the driver for the Wireless Network Adapter from the manufacturer's website. Just look for a driver for a specific laptop model, USB adapter, etc. Below in the article, I will show in more detail how to install the driver for a Wi-Fi adapter.

So you didn't find the driver? You need to install it.

The driver is installed, but Wi-Fi does not work? We check whether the Wi-Fi adapter is turned on, whether there are available networks to connect to, there may be a problem with the router, etc. If everything has been checked, then you need to try to reinstall (update) the driver.

The driver is installed, but there are problems connecting to Wi-Fi(the device does not always connect, the Internet often breaks, etc.)? – Trying to delete old driver, and install a new one by downloading it from the device manufacturer’s website.

Install or update the driver for the Wi-Fi adapter

Where can I get a driver for a wireless network adapter?

As I already wrote above, the driver can be found on the disk that came with the device. Only this method has one drawback. The driver located on the disk may already be out of date. And on the website of the manufacturer of your device, it may already be a new version drivers and it would be good to download and install the new driver. But if it’s not possible, or you don’t want to look for it, then the driver from the disk will also work.

Finding a driver for a wireless adapter is not difficult. For example, I have a model ASUS laptop– K56CM. So we ask Google or Yandex a request “ASUS – K56CM”. We find the official website in the search results and go to it (we get to the page of our device).

Or you can go to the website of your device and search the site, specifying the model. If the page opens in English, then press the language change button and change it to the desired one.

Then, on the page with the description, in our case of a laptop, we look for something like a button “Download”, “Downloads”, “Drivers”, etc. Go to it.

If necessary, indicate for which operating system the driver is needed. Then in the list we look for the driver for the wireless network device (you can refer to the words Wireless Network Adapter, Wireless Lan Driver) and download it to your computer (look at the driver update date to ensure it is the latest version).

If you do not have a laptop, but say a USB adapter connected to a regular computer, then formulate the request to search for a driver in the same way. For example, “TP-LINK TL-WN721N”, or search by device name on the manufacturer’s website.

That's it, we have the driver on our computer. If you just want to install and not reinstall (update) the driver, then unpack the archive (if the driver is in archive form) to the folder and run the installation file. Follow the instructions. After rebooting, Wi-Fi should work.

If you need to reinstall (update) the driver

If you want to reinstall the driver, then I advise you to first remove the old one.

To do this, go to device Manager(how to do this is written at the beginning of the article) and right-click on the Wireless Network Adapter device. Select Properties.

Then go to the tab "Driver" and press the button Delete.

A warning will appear, check the box next to “Uninstall driver programs for this device” and press “Ok”.

That's it, the driver has been removed. Restart your computer. Go to Device Manager. You should see an unknown device appear (Network Controller). This is our wireless adapter, we just don’t have a driver for it, we’ll install it now.

I recommend installing the driver in the following way: if the driver is in the archive, then unpack it into a folder. Go to this folder and run the installation file, usually it is called “setup.exe”. Follow the instructions. After installing the driver, usually Wi-Fi should work even without rebooting. And I hope it will work stably.

Another way to install a driver for a Wi-Fi adapter

Go to device Manager and right click on the unknown device (in our case Network Controller). Select “Update drivers...”.

In the next window, click .

Specify the path to the driver folder and click "Further".
