High-performance dual-band wireless router ASUS RT-N56U. Reviews: Wireless router ASUS RT-N56U, black ASUS router rt n56u supports iptv

Modern technologies never cease to be introduced into our daily life. Just recently, not everyone could afford high-speed access to the global Internet, while now there is a rapid development of wireless information exchange via Wi-Fi. Consider creating wireless connection using the example of a router from Asus, specifically the Asus RT N56U, the configuration of which will be described below.

  • vertical stand;
  • power unit;
  • network cable;
  • software on disk;
  • quick guide;
  • warranty card.

Particularly noteworthy is the design of the Asus RT N56U, which gives it the appearance of a work of art. On the glossy front side there are 6 indicators displaying the status of the device and the Asus brand logo. The left side of the router has a WPS button (quick connection of devices), and on the right there are:

  • gigabit network connectors (1xWAN, 4xLAN);
  • two USB 2.0 connectors;
  • Reset button;
  • connector for connecting the power supply.

Connection and preparation for setup

The first step is to secure the device to the stand and choose a place to place it. When choosing a location, you should take into account that the router should be located approximately in the center of the planned coverage area, away from metal barriers, sunlight, and devices using wireless communication, microwave ovens, refrigerators and other devices that may cause interference.

Next, let's directly connect the Asus N56U connectors. The device's power supply is connected to the DC-in input and to the socket. Connection to a computer for setup can be done via a wired or wireless connection. For a wired connection, connect the router and computer using network cable, which is included in the kit. For wireless settings The computer must have a built-in or plug-in IEEE 802.11 b/g/n adapter. The computer must also have the TCP/IP protocol and one of the latest popular browsers.

Getting to know the interface

To get started, you need to disable the proxy server you are using (if any) in your browser settings. Then in the network management menu you should configure the TCP/IP protocol: select the Ipv4 or Ipv6 protocol and confirm the automatic acquisition of an IP address.

The web interface of the Asus RT N56U router is available at 192.168.1.1, where the default login and password are admin. Among the languages there is Russian. The interface looks quite primitive and intuitive, which makes setup easy. However, the full list of parameters is collected in 8 groups and consists of approximately 30 pages. The main page displays a diagram of your network, including the router, internet, clients, and connected USB devices. The diagram is interactive, so you can easily check or change some of the current settings.

Additionally on home page the following elements are present:

  • AiDisk – assistant in choosing access options for connected USB drives;
  • UPnP media server – setting up a DLNA/UPnP server;
  • EzQoS – control of traffic and network access priorities for different applications. Statistics are also provided for a day or a month.

Setting up an Internet connection

For the convenience of users, in the main menu there is a quick connection setup item - QIS (Quick Internet Setup). Asus RT N56U setup is greatly simplified using this feature. After launch, QIS will begin searching and determining the connection type (Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE and others). After automatically selecting the connection type, you will be asked to enter the data provided by the provider, as well as some additional settings, into the displayed form.

If QIS could not determine the connection type, you should skip automatic setup(Skip to manual settings) and go to manual settings. Here you will need to independently select the type of your network connection (WAN). If you are using a static IP, you will need to enter the IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS server provided by your provider. Accordingly, depending on the type of connection, the necessary data about your connection depends, which you can find out from your provider.

It is also worth keeping in mind that you may need to enter your computer's MAC address into the appropriate router settings, since the ISP may block an unfamiliar MAC address.

In addition to the above items, there are two tabs on the main page of the web interface: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. These values represent Wi-Fi frequency ranges and their individual security settings. Thus, for each range you can choose a personal authentication and encryption method. The SSID field is responsible for the name of your network, the remaining fields are responsible for authentication and encryption.

Connecting USB devices

The USB ports present in the Asus RT N56U allow you to connect external drives with file systems FAT32, NTFS and EXT2/3. Access to data stored on the drive will be available via SMB/CIFS and FTP protocols. There is also the ability to download files via HTTP/FTP/BitTorrent without directly involving a computer. There can be up to 5 simultaneous downloads via p2p, but if more are needed, they can be placed in a queue.

In order to get to the router’s web interface, you need to open your Internet browser and type 192. 168.1.1 in the address bar, Username - admin , Password - admin(provided that the router has factory settings and its IP has not changed).

  4. “Special requirements” – save this server address: "tp.internet.beeline.ru".

Wireless network

To set up a wireless network, follow the following instructions:

Important! When choosing this name, you should pay attention to a small nuance: some devices, such as tablets or phones, do not always correctly identify the network if the name of the access point begins with a capital letter. It is better to start it with a capital letter to avoid such problems.

  • after changing the name, we’ll take care of the security of the connection - go to “Authentication Method” and install “WPA2-Personal”;

Note! The connection password will be the data we entered in step 4.

  • The setup is complete, confirm the changes.

At the end of the process, turn on the search for a wireless network to make sure that the device is displayed correctly. The router should appear in the list. Click on our name new network and select “Connect”. Enter the password and wait for the connection.

After updating the firmware, we begin setting up the router. To do this, you can use a special configuration file loaded through this interface.

Instructions:

The modern digital industry is moving forward so quickly that it is even difficult to predict what other digital technology opportunities await us in the near future. Moral obsolescence of processors and video cards occurs within six months, and sometimes after 3 months, but data transfer devices are not so susceptible to this process. Network equipment can operate successfully for 5 and sometimes 10 years without creating a tangible need for the user to replace it. However, in the niche of data transmission products almost every year there are some changes. They often cannot be called cardinal, but even they are worthy of analysis and practical tests in our laboratory.

The characteristics were collected from information that is presented on the manufacturer’s website and on the actual capabilities of the built-in WEB interface ASUS RT-N56U models.

Package

The packaging is medium in size and has a strict design. The front side indicates the device model and whether it belongs to the “Extreme Performance in Style” products, as well as the ability to work using Gigabit and Wireless-N data transfer standards. On the right are logos of the capabilities supported by this router:

  • support for 802.11n standard @300Mbps Ultra-speedy P2P Download,
  • OS Windows 7 software support,
  • the use of energy-saving technologies in this model,
  • improved signal transmission technology “Beamforming Technology”,
  • Giga fiber Internet support
  • QoS and WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup), which speed up setup and optimize the operation of this equipment.

On the reverse side the manufacturer has placed a short connection diagram of this product to the end-user network, and emphasized the ability to operate in two frequency bands 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz. A separate diagram shows all additional features, which ASUS engineers equipped the ASUS RT-N56U model, such as connecting a printer, 3G USB modem for a backup communication channel, USB storage to create a file server and the ability to work as a “Media Server” for transmitting streaming HD video to digital players.

Equipment

The ASUS RT-N56U package can be called standard for such solutions; it contains everything the user needs to quickly install and configure this router, as well as for its operation.

The box with ASUS RT-N56U contains:

  • CD with software and documentation (it was not included in the test copy);
  • User manual on English language(brief instructions for installation and maintenance software);
  • Patchcord for connecting to Gigabit Ethernet networks provider;
  • Base-leg for installation of this device in a vertical position on the table;
  • Mains power supply.

Router

"Top" network solutions from ASUS have always been distinguished by the elegance of their housing and attractiveness appearance. The ASUS RT-N56U model was no exception. But its main difference from the white design of previous generation models will be the completely black body. Its upper part has a relief of faceted glossy triangles, slightly rotated relative to each other at small angles. This gives the ASUS RT-N56U a resemblance to faceted precious stones. The case looks very “expensive” and adequately emphasizes the high functionality this decision.

This design of the router will help it easily fit into any interior of your room. When installed vertically, ASUS RT-N56U will take up minimal space on the user's desk and provide the highest quality wireless reception.

On the top cover of the device there are signed indicators of the operation of this model. There is an indication of power supply to the device, blinking activity diodes for WLAN (5 GHz), WLAN (2.4 GHz), WAN (Internet) and LAN interfaces of this router, as well as the operation of connected USB devices.

On the base there is a sticker indicating all the main technical data of this model and this particular instance.

On one of the sides there are holes for attaching a leg that supports this model in a vertical position.

On another side there is a “WPS” button for launching fast ASUS settings WPS.

On the back there are a number of connectors and interesting elements. Looking at this sample from left to right, we first see two USB connectors for connecting a USB drive, printer or 3G modem. Next is the black reset button (return to factory settings). Reset is performed by pressing this button for more than five seconds while the device is turned on. Next are the equipment connection connectors. local network Gigabit Ethernet (LAN1-LAN3), and at the end of their row there is a connector for connecting this router to the Gigabit Ethernet external network segment (technologically called WAN). This chain ends with a power supply socket. The location of all connectors is quite standard and will allow you to easily connect wired interfaces to them.

Software

A strong argument for many users when purchasing ASUS RT-N56U can be the clear interactive interface for setting up this router, as well as its functionality. The developers have provided two ways to quickly configure. The first, and simplest of them, is WPS technology, which allows the user to set up a secure wireless network in a few mouse clicks through additional software installed on your computer and a button (WPS) on the device body. The algorithm for this setup itself was described by us in the material “Review of the ASUS RT-N13 SuperSpeed N wireless router”.

However, it is worth drawing our reader's attention to the impossibility of using this algorithm in the case of building a complex network or a network with equipment that does not support this function. In such a situation, the main way to configure the ASUS RT-N56U will be the WEB interface. It also has a small "quick start" setup assistant.

This tab contains all the primary settings necessary for the standard operation of your network. An interactive assistant will always correct you in the upper right corner. He will point out what you did wrong.

You can use the sequential algorithm for setting up the router to work as a network file server after connecting a USB drive to it. Here you are asked to select the access method (FTP or SAMBA protocols) and indicate the name of your network storage. However, this algorithm only allows for setting up unprotected access to your files. To access using a login and password, you should use more professional settings in the “Advanced settings” item. We will talk about it below.

The ASUS RT-N56U network device supports the “Media Server” functions of the network. This feature will allow other members of your network to automatically find media content located on this file server.

If your main priority is the speed of gaming applications, then click the “Gaming Blaster” button, if the main thing is the speed of downloading files via FTP or SAMBA, then the “AiDisk” button, etc.

On the second tab in this section you can monitor the load on each interface of your router.

The “Advanced Settings” window displays a tree of all settings for this model. Through it it is very convenient to search for the options you need. All these tricks should help even a user inexperienced in network technologies to efficiently and easily configure this model for normal operation in any of the modes it supports.

The most flexible and functional for creating the configuration of the router under review were the remaining points of the same WEB interface, made quite thoughtfully and conveniently.

In the “Wireless - General” menu item, you can set the name of the connection, which appears as the name of the network when connecting to it, set the channel number to which clients can connect, the mode Wi-Fi work interface (Auto, Big Mixed, n Only, g Only, b Only) and the authorization method for such connections. Based on the selected authorization method, the radio channel encryption method is set. Supported encryption and authentication standards are listed in the specifications table above. All this can be done separately for 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz airwaves.

The page responsible for enabling/disabling WPS technology allows you to set up a secure wireless network in a matter of minutes.

On the “Bridge” page of the “Wireless Network” tab, you can set the operating mode with the corresponding MAC addresses of remote bridge points and the number of channels used for this type of connection.

“Wireless Network MAC Address Filter” will allow you to specify a list of physical addresses of client devices that are allowed or denied access to this router.

“Setting RADIUS” will allow you to set IP addresses, ports and passwords for authorization on the RADIUS server.

On the “Wireless Network – Professional” page, the manufacturer has provided the settings as fully as possible Wi-Fi networks: forced setting of connection speed, signal timings, operating modes, etc.

You can enter the IP address and local network mask in the appropriate fields.

The DHCP server received all the standard settings for such a service. Here you can set the association of the issued IPs with the MAC addresses of connecting clients.

Quite standard IP routing capabilities can be provided by the “LAN – Route” page settings.

“WAN - Internet connection” is one of the basic settings pages for this router. Here you can find complete settings for the connection via the WAN interface: starting from setting the method for obtaining an IP address (statically or dynamically) and ending with the ability to configure a VPN client connection option on the incoming interface of the router PPPoE, L2TP or PPTP.

There is a flexible QoS traffic priority system with three priority levels. You can limit the incoming connection speed and assign priority to packets selected by the user's services by specifying the source IP address and destination port.

The “NAT Settings – Port Switch” tab allows you to specify a list of ports for incoming packets with corresponding redirection to other local ports.

Perhaps a very useful page of the WEB interface may be “NAT Settings - Virtual Server” - using the settings of this tab, you can organize secure access to local network servers for various purposes (HTTP, FTP, DNS and any other services). Any number of them will be pseudo-replaced for external users by one virtual server configured on this router, which redirects all requests to the directions specified in the list.

The “NAT – DMZ Settings” tab provides a simpler procedure for creating virtual server located on the local network. The router is put into the mode of “forwarding” all packets to a specific (one) network machine, which performs the functions of the necessary server for external requests.

In the “WAN – DDNS” tab, the manufacturer has placed the DDNS client settings with the ability to receive this service on Internet servers.

When connected external storage via the USB 2.0 connector of the router, its resources can be distributed via SAMBA or FTP protocols. Here you can specify the rights for the users included in the list to have access (read, write) to certain open folders.

In the “Other Settings” section you set the name of your file server, the number of simultaneous connections to it and the language of the FTP server.

One of the rather unique features of this model is the ability to connect a USB 3G modem to it for organizing communication via cellular networks. This can be either the main Internet channel or a backup one. The most important thing is that there is a very large selection of the type of modem used and its model.

"Firewall - General" is provided here basic setup network protection settings: enable/disable this function, its initial state(all open or all closed) and setting up WEB access via the WAN interface.

In the “URL Filter” item, you can set time filtering and URL blocking parameters.

There is also a simple MAC access filter (filtering by MAC addresses).

WEB interface page “Filter between local and global networks» provides filtering with the ability to set the day of the week and time, outgoing and incoming packets with determination of the source IP address, port (ports) and transmission protocol.

The user can also select the operating mode of this device depending on his needs.

Shared IP mode - in this mode The router uses the NAT function to connect to the Internet and route packets. Recommended to use for home network with Internet access.

Wireless router - this mode involves using an external Internet network through another router, while ASUS RT-N56U does simple routing without NAT to a network connected to the WAN interface. More necessary for a network router in small office networks.

Summarizing the capabilities of the internal software, we can talk about excellent firmware equipment, both for positioning this device in the home router segment with a relatively small load on network communications. There are many popular technologies and capabilities here, but along with fairly extensive firewall settings, there are also good options for filtering external unwanted traffic - its main task was to limit the access of local users to the external network and to specific www addresses.

Testing

When testing, we will try first of all to pay attention to the operation of this Wi-Fi router under ideal operating conditions of a wireless network, at a distance of no more than two meters between points. Bandwidth wireless channel will be measured at frequencies of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and we will also numerically determine the total throughput of the NAT interface of the ASUS RT-N56U model. For a visual comparison, we will measure the communication channel that is formed by two LAN ports of the router.

It is worth immediately drawing the attention of our reader to the incomplete adequacy and repeatability of the test results of the wireless network segment. Such communication channels use wireless standards 802.11, and all radio channels are very sensitive to radio interference from almost any household or digital equipment. Therefore, it is worth taking into account the operation of mobile devices, microwave ovens and other electrical appliances that create radio interference.

The ASUS RT-N56U model will be tested in our laboratory in conjunction with a network Wi-Fi card Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN and Gigabit Ethernet Intel 82566MC.

Comparative Performance Testing Wi-Fi channel at a frequency of 2.4 GHz and the maximum connection speed obtained for this connection is 300 Mbit/s with line of sight at a distance of two meters using WPA2 encryption.

In both directions.

Client data flow to ASUS RT-N56U.

Data flow from ASUS RT-N56U to the client.

Comparative testing of the performance of a Wi-Fi channel at a frequency of 5 GHz and the maximum connection speed obtained for this connection of 300 Mbit/s with line of sight at a distance of two meters using WPA2 encryption.

In both directions.

When operating a wireless channel at a frequency of 2.4 GHz, we received a maximum transmission speed of an average of 85 Mbit/s, while for a channel at a frequency of 5 GHz this figure reached 150 Mbit/s. This almost doubling of speed confirms our guesses about the direct relationship between the purity of the airwaves and the speed of data transmission over it.

In the 2.4 GHz band there were up to 8-10 networks, while at 5 GHz frequencies there was not a single network. It is for this reason that the test results at 2.4 GHz and at 5 GHz are significantly different. Note that ideally, data rates for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies when using the IEEE 802.11n specification should be equal. The main advantage of the tests we conducted at a frequency of 2.4 GHz is the analysis of the resistance of the ASUS RT-N56U router to radio networks saturated with networks. After all, the space around any modern apartment building or building with a mass of small offices, where each company has its own wireless network, has precisely this kind of radio frequency environment. For this reason, speed measurements at an air frequency of 5 GHz can be considered an ideal case with maximum speed indicators, while at a frequency of 2.4 GHz testing was carried out as close as possible to the modern reality of using wireless communication lines.

Comparative testing of the speed of packets passing through the NAT service of this router.

Comparative testing of the speed of packets passing through the LAN interface for another LAN client.

Data flow in both directions.

Checking the speed of packets passing through the NAT service of the ASUS RT-N56U router gave good results. The maximum speed was 345 Mbit/s, which is more than acceptable for modern Internet channels. The throughput of the LAN interfaces turned out to be even higher - 977 Mbit/s, but this is already a limitation of the capabilities of the Gigabit Ethernet channel.

Note also that when transferring a video file of several tens of gigabytes between LAN interfaces, the transfer speed was 75 MB/s, which is about 600 Mbit/s. When connecting a USB drive to the ASUS RT-N56U USB interface, the maximum speed of writing and reading from this media was 9-10 MB/s.

Overall, the ASUS RT-N56U model made us very happy with its performance. All speed indicators turned out to be significantly higher than the analogues of this router, file server and Wi-Fi access point that we had previously tested.

conclusions

Prospects for use ASUS router RT-N56U is as diverse as its functionality. However, the main direction of its application will be the organization of access to the Gigabit Ethernet network, through connection via the 802.11g and 802.11n protocols, wireless networks in home networks that are undemanding of channel width and small office communications. The significant advantages of this model include its performance and functionality: support for 5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (4 LAN and one WAN), operation in two airwave bands (5 GHz and 2.4 GHz) Wi-Fi n communication standard, good as for this niche of devices, the capabilities of a network file server, print server and media server. You can connect a fairly wide variety of USB 3G modems to ASUS RT-N56U, which will help organize access to the Internet network through channels cellular communications. Naturally, for all this functionality the user will have to pay the corresponding amount.

We also note some minor disadvantages of the ASUS RT-N56U solution. When this router warms up, the speed of the wireless network segment decreases slightly (by 10%). This drawback cannot be called significant, given the already very high performance of this model.

A strong argument for the user when purchasing this solution may be its fast and easy setup. WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) technology allows you to set up a secure wireless network in a few mouse clicks through additional software installed on your computer and the (WPS) button on the back. The developers can also be praised for the advanced capabilities of the WEB interface of this router; its versatility and clarity will become a good assistant to the system administrator. Overall, the product turned out to be of quite high quality and attractive, both in design and functionality.

  • Attractive design.
