Let's assume you chose the Hotmail.com email service for important correspondence. Your choice isn't that bad. Microsoft has produced a more or less decent service, especially in comparison with some others that are popular among the Russian-speaking part of the world's population. However, it will not hurt you to know about the advantages, disadvantages and some subtleties. Therefore, as usual, we pay the greatest attention not to theory, but to practice. Let's start with the most important thing.

The most important settings

In order to be able to access your mailbox from public Wi-Fi networks while traveling, on business trips, in a cafe, at the airport, and so on, you should make sure that there is an encrypted connection.

Setting up a secure HTTPS connection

For some reason, a secure connection is not used by default. Apparently, the owners of the service believe that ordinary hamsters do not need it. And whoever needs it will turn it on himself. Include:

Settings -> Advanced privacy options -> Go to HTTPS settings -> Use HTTPS automatically -> Save

That's it, now you can work with mail via the web interface from open Wi-Fi networks.

Quick login

In order not to contemplate the beauty of the Windows Live page every time, but to immediately get into the “Inbox”:

Despite the tautology, it is stated clearly. You entered your username and password and immediately found yourself in your mailbox.

POP3 setup

To avoid having to periodically log into the web interface and manually cut out a lot of letters that are no longer needed:

Options -> Other options -> POP protocol and deleting downloaded messages -> Follow the settings of another program...

Alas, this bun does not always produce an adequate effect, and messages often remain in the “Inbox” folder, and even marked as unread.

Mail clients

I was lucky with this. The mail client in the Opera browser or the Mozilla Thunderbird program will automatically fetch from the server the parameters required to set up a secure connection.

We specify POP3, since IMAP connection is not currently provided by the Hotmail.com service.

Other subtleties

In addition, in the settings of the Hotmail.com email service, you can ensure against accidental emptying of the folder with deleted messages. In the sense, leave the opportunity to return mail from oblivion after accidentally pressing the wrong button.

Of course, you can enable forwarding to another address, but in this case you will face the following minor troubles:

1. very inspiring information that you need to periodically look into the web interface, otherwise your mailbox will be liquidated in a few months;
2. an annoying warning in your inbox saying, imagine all your emails being forwarded.

True, the latter is not so bad in terms of security: if someone, having somehow learned the password, quietly sets up the transfer, the secret will immediately become apparent.

Flaws

The web interface constantly requires not just the latest version of the browser, but also a popular browser. It is completely impossible to log in from some Internet browsers specific to free operating systems. For example, from Epiphany.

Although, of course, why be surprised, because the Hotmail.com email service is owned by Microsoft. GNU/Linux is not completely blocked - and thank you for that. However, old releases of any browsers are not allowed into mail, regardless of the OS.

In the early spring of 2012, the minimum interval between calls to the server via POP3 was increased to fifteen minutes.

The spam filter was very overdone. It is useless to mark automatic mailings from different services as “not spam”; they will still be screened out. But that's not so bad.

The trouble is that completely harmless “single” letters from people, not robot programs, are also eliminated. We communicated with someone for many months, without knowing grief, and then suddenly his messages begin to be filtered out.

Advantages

Let's summarize

So, if you are not constantly online, the speed of delivery and sending of correspondence is not critical for you, and your browser is popular and updated on time, then perhaps you will like the Hotmail.com email service.

If you receive dozens of letters a day, you are forced to respond to them and at the same time do not confuse anything, do not lose sight of a single important message, do not save innocent victims of a paranoid filter from the Spam folder, do not wait fifteen minutes to urgently send a response from mail program, then you are better off choosing Gmail or Yandex Mail.

Above, to consider working with email, we looked at registration on the MAIL.RU and NAROD.RU servers, which provide POP3 and SMTP servers for working with a mailbox in Outlook.

But how to receive or send a message if Outlook features are not available, and quick access to information is necessary (you are on vacation, your computer is broken, or there is no appropriate software at the moment)? The solution is to access mail information via a Web interface using any browser. Roughly speaking, working with mail via Outlook is transferred to working with browser mail and loading special Web pages that provide an interface (essentially) similar to Outlook, i.e. the page also contains hyperlink commands: Create message, View, Send, Delete etc. Thus, the user only needs a computer with Internet access, which can always be found in any Internet cafe in the city.

Now let's move on to the specific implementation of this feature. Although the MAIL.RU mail server, on which we looked at an example of working with email, has this capability, here we will look at working with a specialized mail server - HOTMAIL.

Hotmail is an international Microsoft server that provides services similar to those provided by MAIL.RU, but in addition, registration with Hotmail gives the right to use a number of other additional services, which will be discussed below.

Registration on the Hotmail server

Registration on the Hotmail server gives the user access to all information on Microsoft servers. By registering, you receive a Microsoft passport, which uniquely identifies you online on sites such as MSN, Hotmail, PASSPORT, etc. In addition, registration with Hotmail gives the user several additional services that interact with Microsoft products, such as MS Office (Outlook, in particular) and MSN Messenger. We will not talk more about the advantages of registering with Hotmail, but will immediately move on to describing the necessary actions.

Sometimes there are cases when a user entered the login of an existing user or incorrect information, Hotmail will politely warn you about this and ask you to correct the error or select a correction option from the list.

General principles of working with Hotmail

So, after registration, you have become a full-fledged user with a huge range of opportunities provided by Microsoft. Let's move on to consider working with mail through the Hotmail Web interface.

Naturally, the interface of this site is different from the Outlook interface, but the principles of working with mail are the same; unfortunately, the scope of this book does not allow us to describe in detail the process of sending, receiving and organizing messages via the Web interface, especially since this is not necessary. The interface is intuitive. We will only describe the process of creating and sending a test message through the Hotmail Web interface (Fig. 11.14).

HTTP Account - Hotmail

But in addition to the ability to work with Hotmail mail through the Web interface using a Web browser, an Outlook user can create an account similar to MAIL.RU, but not the POP3 type, but HTTP. In this section we will demonstrate the process of creating a new account.

After creating the account, a new root will appear in the Outlook folder tree - Hotmail, containing subfolders Inbox, Sent Items, Delete Items and Outbox, working with which is similar to working with folders for an account of the POP3 type, discussed in Chapter 9 "Email".
