St. Julian's is one of the busiest and most picturesque resorts in Malta. This area has been planned in such a way that it acts as a dividing strip between the fashionable area and the area in which the main entertainment areas are concentrated.

Spinola Bay is the pearl of the San Julian resort, giving a special charm to the panorama of the city. The main attraction of this part of the city, where there is practically no development, is the many ducks that not only locals, but also tourists love to see. The best time to peacefully enjoy the beautiful views of this magnificent bay is sunset.

Beach St. George's Bay

Beach St. George's Bay is the most popular artificial sand beach in the city of St. Julian's Bay. It is located in the hottest area of Malta - Paceville.

During the day it is relatively calm here, people relax on the beach, but when night falls, “night life” begins in the form of discos and bars.

On the beach you will find all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay: sun loungers and umbrellas, as well as equipment for rafting, surfing and other water activities.

The beach is also equipped with bathrooms. There are kiosks selling soft drinks and ice cream on the beach, however, there are several cafes and restaurants to choose from nearby.

One of the most beautiful cathedrals of St. Julian's, built in the neo-Gothic style. He opened his wings over Balluta Bay. The cathedral was built in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

LOVE

Interesting installation "LOVE" by Richard England at the entrance to Patchville. In the evening, it is illuminated by spotlights so that in the bay on the shore of which it is installed, the word Love can be read in a mirror image.

Garden in honor of Independence

Independence Park is located next to St. Julian's Bay and is a kind of dividing line between the cities of St. Julian's and Sliema on the island of Malta.

Walking here is a pleasure, as is the case everywhere in Malta. You feel very cozy and comfortable here at any time of the year.

Dragonara Casino

The Dragonara Casino, Malta's oldest casino, opened in 1964. The casino is located in the city of St. Julian's, on Cape Dragonara Point, in a historical building built in 1870, in the former summer residence of banker Emmanuel Scicluna. The building is stylized as a structure from the ancient Roman era.

The casino has 186 slot machines, a 12-seater automatic roulette, and a 12-seater machine with horse racing. In addition, there are 19 tables for playing Roulette, Black Jack, Caribbean Stud Poker, Super Texas Poker, Punto Banco, Open Poker.

The most popular attractions in St. Julian's Bay with descriptions and photographs for every taste. Choose the best places to visit famous places in San Julian's Bay on our website.

St. Julian's is one of the most popular resorts in Malta and, in my opinion, probably the most controversial city in the country. On the one hand, living here is considered prestigious - good housing, luxurious casinos, excellent restaurants, large shopping centers and even the only Maltese skyscraper. St Julian's is the country's business and educational centre. It is here that most of the schools are located, where people from all over the world come who are eager to learn English. But, on the other hand, such a concentration of students has led to the fact that the most famous area of St. Julian's - Paceville - has become the same Cinderella that turns into a pumpkin at midnight. I am “lucky” to live in the heart of Paceville, so I know first-hand what it’s like. However, let's tell this tale from the beginning.

How to get there

By plane

Air Baltic flies from Moscow and St. Petersburg with a transfer in Riga (approximately 120 EUR) and Turkish Airline with a transfer in Istanbul (a little more expensive - from 150 EUR). Direct flights are obviously not constant.

You can find flight options for your dates.

In Malta, you can take a taxi from Luqa Airport to St Julian's. The cost of such a trip will be approximately 20 EUR. In Malta, taxi fares are fixed and depend on the distance. It is also convenient to travel around the island by bus; more about this will be below in the corresponding section.

By bus

The island has an extensive network of bus routes. From the airport to St. Julian's, for example, there is a bus with the mysterious number X2. I will provide more detailed information on buses and travel prices in the “How to get around the city” section, since the prices for buses within the city are no different from the prices for moving around the island as a whole. Looking ahead, I will say that one trip will cost you a maximum of 2 EUR.

By car

To reach St Julian's by car, you can rent one from Luqa Airport. Read more about this in the “Car rental” section.

By ferry

If you come for more than three weeks (for example, to study at one of the English schools), then it is more profitable to rent an apartment. Schools usually help you find housing, but if you decide to do it yourself, keep in mind that in Malta a “long-term stay” is from six months, and in some cases from a year. That is, if in the description of the apartment you like you see a price of 800 EUR per month (this is a good price for a one-bedroom studio), know that the price is valid for renting apartments for six months or more. When renting for 2-3 months, the monthly payment may increase to 900-1000 EUR or, which is very likely, you may simply be refused to rent housing for a period of less than six months. It is also worth checking whether electricity, Internet and gas are included in the price. They are often considered separately.

Spinola Bay

One of the most recognizable places in Malta. Apartments and hotels overlooking the bay are in great demand. It is in this area that the most luxurious restaurants with excellent cuisine and equally beautiful views are located. And the Portomaso skyscraper is only a seven-minute walk away. The Hilton hotel is located on the first to sixth floors of this business center.

Balluta

This area of St. Julian's already borders the neighboring city. Traditionally, it is believed that business people like to settle in Sliema. Thus, Balluta finds itself at the junction of St Julian's, which never sleeps, and Sliema, where people have a more relaxed schedule, which makes its location very advantageous. It’s only a 20-30 minute walk to the center of active day and night life, and at the same time, no one bothers you to sleep at the time when you are used to doing so.

St. George's Bay

The northern part of the island, where St. Julian's is located, has mostly rocky beaches. The only sandy beach here is in St. George's Bay. A cozy cove, golden sand and... a lot of people. From about mid-June until mid-October, there is literally nowhere for an apple to fall on the beach. It is not surprising that many people prefer rocky beaches, as they say in guidebooks. This number of people is also due to the close proximity of the Paceville area and the concentration of English schools.

On the northern side of the bay, a little away from the general bustle, are the five-star hotels Corinthia and Radisson Blu Malta. On the opposite side of the bay, on a small peninsula, there is also a five-star hotel, the Westin Dragonara Resort. One of the largest and most magnificent casinos in Malta, Dragonara Casino, is also located here.

The closer you get to Paceville, the more diverse the selection of hotels becomes. In close proximity to the beach, you will find four and three star hotels and even hostels.

Paceville

The division into Paceville and the area of St. George's Bay is geographically very arbitrary. And yet Paceville is a place that cannot be confused with anything else. Firstly, here, as already mentioned, English schools are located, and therefore the temptation to settle nearby is very great. However, remember that, secondly, most guidebooks to Malta write that it is an “entertainment mecca”. In a certain sense this is true. There is a cinema with 13 screens, a diving center, and a beach. But, first of all, Paceville is the center of the city's nightlife. If you decide to live in this area, then you have boldly and confidently made the decision to not go to bed earlier than six in the morning, and maybe sometimes, on Mondays, to sleep in.

Starting from the square, which bears the same name, streets diverge in all directions, where each house has several clubs, bars or restaurants. One piece of advice, if you decide to live in Paceville, choose streets closer to the sea. They are much calmer. It’s only a ten-minute walk to the maelstrom of events, and there are a thousand times more opportunities to get enough sleep.

What are the prices for holidays?

Holiday prices here are slightly lower than, for example, in neighboring Italy. Accommodation starts from 25 EUR per bed in a hostel and from 40 EUR in hotels (out of season, figures can be significantly lower). You can have a good meal for two for 30 EUR. Some beaches may have an entrance fee, but no more than 2-3 EUR. Excursions from 10 EUR. More details on each point in the relevant sections of the article.

The cheapest option is to rent an apartment (preferably two bedrooms for 3-4 people) and cook at home (the supermarket in the city is excellent). The best way to get around the island is by bus, and around the city - on foot. It is not only cheaper, but also much more convenient than all other types of transport.

Main attractions. What to see

A long time ago, when pirates still ruled the Mediterranean Sea, no one wanted to settle on the northern coast of the island. However, something had to be done with the pirates, or rather, it was necessary to somehow defend against them. To this end, at the end of the 17th century, the first fortifications began to be built in the area of the current city of St. Julian's, the remains of some of them are still preserved, despite all the efforts of pirates to destroy the glorious history of the Maltese. We will certainly talk about the tower of St. George and the Spinola Palace, around which, in fact, the city grew, that is, at first just a fishing village. St. Julian's truly became a city only at the end of the 19th century, when this place became a popular resort among the rich people of Malta and Great Britain.

Top 3

St. Julian's is a small and not very ancient city. As already mentioned, there has never been much history here, but you can still see something. The main attractions of the city can be divided into three types: fortifications, churches and chapels and palaces. The churches are all relatively modern and are treated as attractions very conditionally. Among other significant historical monuments, only three can be distinguished: the Spinola Palace, the Dragonara Palace and the Tower of St. George.

Spinola Palace or Villa Spinola

The city began with a palace, which was built in the 17th century by the Marquis Paolo Spinola as a summer residence. There was a beautiful park around the palace, and for a while everything went well. However, the palace was destroyed twice (during the French occupation at the beginning of the 19th century and during the First World War). After almost a century of reconstruction, the palace is now closed to the public except for the basement where the restaurant is located.

Dragonara Palace

The hotel map points to the small peninsula of Dragonara, whose name comes from a legend that claims dragons once lived there to ward off pirates. It is not surprising that the Marquis of Scicluna (who at that time, however, was not yet a marquis) named his summer residence, built at the end of 1870, with the same sonorous name. Today the building houses a luxury casino. The hotel of the same name was built much later.

Defensive structures. St George's Tower

Malta has been subjected to attacks and severe destruction throughout its history. At first these were pirates, and the first watchtowers and coastal fortifications were built to protect against them. Then the French came, then the First World War, then the Second - and very little remained of all these fortifications. St George's Tower, built in the 17th century, served as a radio point during the Second World War and is now located on the grounds of the Corinthia Hotel. A little further into the city you will find the Barracks of St. George, which are perfectly preserved to this day.

Beaches. Which ones are better

  • The most famous beach of St. Julian's and the only sandy one is beach in St. George's Bay. It looks magical, especially if you are lucky enough to see it empty. Golden sand and clear blue water combined with the curve of the bay - an unforgettable picture. The entrance to the water is gentle, and in general the bay is not very deep. The beach is well equipped - bar, changing cabins, sun loungers (for a fee within 2 EUR).
  • There is also a small piece of sandy beach on the territory of the Dragonara Hotel, which can be accessed for a small fee.
  • The rest of the beaches of St. Julianas are rocky. One of the most famous is in the Balluta area. The beach is also equipped with sun loungers. On rocky beaches, descent into the water is carried out along a special ladder, like in a swimming pool, that is, right next to the shore it is quite deep.

Churches and temples. Which ones are worth visiting?

The peculiarity of St. Julian's churches is that almost all of them were built in the twentieth century and have a completely modern appearance, which is why they are not immediately recognized by tourists as religious institutions.

  • The largest church in the city is Church of Saint Julian, the patron saint of the city, was built in 1978. It is located at Lapsi street, 115. Services are held every day early in the morning.

  • On the same Lapsi street there is a church built in 1682. This church is also called old Church of St. Julian. It was the center of St Julian's religious life until a large new church was built. Today, services are also held in the old church, and you can get married here.

All other churches were built in the 20th century:

  • St. Ritha church was built at the beginning of the twentieth century. Still valid today;
  • Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel;
  • Church of St. Clare (Monastery of St. Claire);
  • The Millenium Chapel, which is located in the heart of Paceville.

More information on all St. Julian's churches - addresses, opening hours, service hours, etc. - you can look.

What to see in 1 day

The whole of St Julian's can be seen in one day. All movements within the city, even on foot, will take 15–20 minutes maximum.

Let's say you woke up in the morning. Well, like in the morning - closer to noon. You don't need to rush. Not in the morning for sure.

  • 12:00 - Have breakfast at the hotel.
  • 13:00 - Go to the nearest beach. Let go of all thoughts. Everything. You are on vacation.
  • 15:00 - As soon as you feel hungry, choose one of the wonderful restaurants for lunch, for example, in Spinola Bay. The view is beautiful and the food is delicious.
  • 16:30 - Then you can walk to the Spinola Palace, from there walk to Cape Dragonara to admire the palace of the same name and maybe take another swim on the beach. Finish your walk at St George's Tower - you've seen all the sights of St Julian's.
  • 18:30 - Now you can return to the hotel to change clothes for the evening adventures.
  • 20:00 - Have dinner in the Portomaso skyscraper area.
  • 21:30 - Then go up to the 22nd floor to drink your first cocktail.
  • 22:00 - And now it’s time to go to Paceville. Walk the streets, looking into the clubs you like. Drink a little, dance. Go to bed and repeat the route the next morning.

What to see in the area

Since there is not much to see in St. Julian's itself, first of all, I recommend

  • Get a bus ticket City Sightseeing(more on this in the "What to do" section) - St Julian's has five stops along the route of the bus).
  • Of course, it’s worth a trip to the city (more about this on our website) - the distance from St. Julian’s is 13 kilometers. By bus number 202 the trip will take 40–50 minutes.
  • And to the capital of Malta Valletta(about this) - by car Only 8 kilometers. You can also get there by bus No. 13 (approximately 25–35 minutes excluding traffic jams).

Nearby Islands

  • Wigi's Kitchen
  • Truffle & Truffles
  • The Terrace Restaurant Malta at The Westin Dragonara Resort
  • Hugo's Lounge

Expensive

In expensive restaurants (Barracuda, Caviar&Bull) lunch for two will cost you about 70–90 EUR. And in Zeri's restaurant, for example, one dish can cost 25–30 EUR, but the portions are so huge that it is recommended to take one for two - this is generally typical of Mediterranean cuisine and Maltese cuisine, in particular, to make large portions

  • Caviar & Bull
  • Blue Elephant
  • Barracuda Restaurant
  • Zeri's

Safety. What to watch out for

Clubs and nightlife

Paceville is a lively area both day and night. There is an incredible variety of cafes, restaurants, and clubs. But only after eight in the evening does this fountain turn on at full power and St. Julian’s does not sleep until the morning.

On the map I marked the epicenter of Malta's nightlife. From Paceville Piazza there are streets where every inch is occupied by what we call nightlife. Every month some clubs close, and new ones immediately open in their place. I don't think anyone knows for sure, but they say there are more than five hundred establishments in just four streets.

Sky Club, Plush, Fuego, Native, Soho Lounge, Havana, Hugo's Lounge- the most famous clubs in Malta.

  • About Hugo We have already said above that as a restaurant, these are two separate floors: on the first floor there is food, on the second floor there is a dance floor and a bar (the cost of cocktails is 6–7 EUR).
  • IN Soho- a good selection of cocktails (at about the same price) and very tasty desserts (I recommend trying Panna Cotta with hot pepper if it’s on the menu).
  • In club Native there is a hall where you can take salsa lessons during the day, and at ten in the evening the hall opens for everyone who wants to show their skills in this hot Latin American dance.

  • On the twenty-second floor of the Portomaso skyscraper you will find a cozy club Twenty Two with pleasant music and a stunning and one-of-a-kind panorama of the city.

Each club, trying to attract as many clients as possible, offers some fantastic promotions: buy two cocktails - the third for free, or even buy one - get the second for free, endless compliments from the bartender, barkers scurrying around the streets handing out flyers that you can use get a shot of tequila for just 1 EUR, many clubs distribute flyers for free drinks in English schools in the neighborhood. It is difficult to resist and still leave this place on your own two feet.

Of course, they never charge money for entry here. There is no face control or dress code either. Because everyone is dancing!

Despite all the nuances, it’s worth visiting Paceville to feel the crazy energy of the party. And yes. It's very cool there! Just don't lose your head.

Extreme Sports

However, St. Julian's isn't all about activity at night. There are several diving schools located here. You can take an express course - 1 hour in the pool + 1 hour in the sea. The cost of this course is 65 EUR. If desired, you can take a longer course (4–5 days). In the future, the cost of one dive starts from 28 EUR. The indicated price includes all necessary equipment, equipment, certificates, and transfers around the island.

Theoretically, in St. Julian's you can find offices of companies that will also offer you fishing or horse riding, but in fact, this will take place in another part of the island. In general, you can read about active recreation in Malta on our website.

Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift

There are no special souvenirs in St. Julian's. You can bring everything that is typical for Malta as a whole - souvenirs with Maltese symbols, jewelry, glassware, cactus jam - you can read more about souvenirs in. You'll find a cluster of souvenir shops on Bay Street and Paceville.

How to get around the city

In my opinion, it is better to move around the city on foot. As I already said, you can walk it from end to end in 20 minutes. When crossing the road, remember that in Malta you drive on the right. If you still decide to use transport, then buses and taxis are at your service.

Taxi. What features exist

You can easily order a taxi at the hotel reception or in special offices (there is one, for example, near the EC English School). The cost of a trip around the island can vary from 10 to 25 EUR. There is no point in taking a taxi around the city - firstly, it will still cost at least 10 EUR, and secondly, the city is so small that it’s easier to walk

Buses

The island has an excellent network of bus routes. From almost anywhere on the island you can get to St. Julian's by direct bus, as almost 15 routes pass through the city.

Route 13 connects St Julian's with Valletta.

Bus fares are 1.5 EUR in winter, 2 EUR in summer (from mid-June to mid-October) and 3 EUR at night. For this money you can go anywhere, make transfers and not pay anything extra for two hours. You pay the fare to the driver. Moreover, if you don’t have a banknote smaller than 10 EUR in your wallet, you may be denied travel. If you come for a week and don't plan to sit still, use unlimited cards for traveling by bus. The cost of the card for a week is 21 EUR for an adult and 15 EUR for children. Please note that only children under three years old can ride for free. Travel for children aged 4 years and older must be paid. If you come for a longer period (from 1 month), then in Malta there is a system of discounts on bus travel for all categories of passengers.

The town of St. Julian's itself is not very big. From the border with the neighboring town there are only five or six bus stops to Paceville. On foot it takes about half an hour, maybe 40 minutes. In my opinion, it's easier this way. Buses sometimes get stuck in traffic jams.

Transport rental

Details about renting a car are written in. Just don’t forget that traffic in Malta is on the left, and even experienced drivers find it difficult to change lanes the first time. You can compare prices from different rental companies.

Theoretically, you can rent a bicycle. But there are no bike paths in the city. There are a lot of people on the sidewalks and a lot of traffic on the road, so it's not easy on a bike.

Friends, you often ask, so we remind you! 😉

Flights- you can compare prices from all airlines and agencies!

Hotels- don’t forget to check prices from booking sites! Don't overpay. This !

Rent a Car- also an aggregation of prices from all rental companies, all in one place, let's go!

Anything to add?

St. Julian's is a city on the island of Malta on the Mediterranean coast and a popular tourist resort with well-equipped beaches and a wide range of entertainment. The name of the city comes from St. Julian the Hospitaler, who is the heavenly patron of the city.

The main attractions of St. Julian's are the Spinola Palace and the Dragonara Palace, the Gothic Church of St. Julian's, the Portomaso Business Center, as well as fortifications: coastal fortifications and the watchtower of St. George.

The largest number of tourists prefer the beaches in St. George's Bay, as there are predominantly sandy swimming areas. One of the places visited is the Paceville district, a center of nightlife. A huge number of restaurants, nightclubs, discos, bars, shops, restaurants, etc. are concentrated here.

Shopping and entertainment complexes, cozy restaurants annually attract thousands of tourists from all over the world.

A little history

It is believed that the city is named after Julian the Poor, who patronized travelers. Legends say that the saint spent all his savings on those in need: the sick, the homeless, lonely old people.

There was a time when these places were empty due to pirate robberies. At the end of the 19th century, the situation changed for the better and St. Julian's became a popular holiday destination among wealthy residents from different countries.

Nowadays, this city is a paradise for young people, connoisseurs and those who like to spin roulette or play poker.

Weather in St Julian's

The tourist season in the city lasts from May to September. At this time, the weather in St. Julian's is quite hot and sunny, but the proximity of the sea makes the climate comfortable, sometimes even pleasantly cool.

St. Julian's is a modern city in which, unfortunately, it is increasingly rare to find nature untouched by man. It must be said that local residents not only build houses, but also decorate the city with numerous flower beds, parks and public gardens.

What to see in the city?

The history of the island and the city of St. Julian's is such that for many centuries these places have been plundered by pirates. Therefore, the buildings of that time were exclusively defensive in nature, for example, the watchtower of St. George, the Tower of Madlin, the tower of St. Marcas. There are also modern buildings in St. Julian's, one of which is the Portomaso Tower - a 23-story business center, the 1st-6th floors of which are reserved for the Hilton hotel.

Despite this, the richest palaces of the local nobility also became architectural monuments. At the end of the 17th century, Paolo Spinola rebuilt a wonderful castle, which was used for balls and important meetings. Later the house was enlarged many times and ennobled by the descendants of Spinola. Unfortunately, in the 19th century the palace was destroyed by the French. The castle was restored for about two centuries.

Another significant architectural site is the Dragonara Palace, built in the 19th century by the richest man of his time named Emanuele Sciclun. Now this building houses a casino.

The population of St. Julian's is religious, so many temples and chapels have been built in the city.

Where to eat?

There is an opinion that St. Julian's is a city of restaurants. And I must say that this is completely justified. Here you can try delicious dishes of various cuisines.

Most of the cafes and bars are located in the center of Malta's nightlife. Decent restaurants are located in hotels in the city. The Joint steakhouse is one of a kind, designed exclusively for meat lovers. You can taste the best dishes of Italian and French cuisine at the Peppino's restaurant. Lovers of Japanese rolls and noodles, go to Gochi. On weekends, dine at the L'Ordine restaurant, only on these days customers are pampered with national dishes. You can enjoy Maltese cuisine in the home restaurant Maltese Mama. Most restaurants are open 24 hours a day.

Let's decide on accommodation

Perhaps the list of good hotels, guest houses, villas and hostels is even more extensive. Finding comfortable accommodation is not at all difficult; it all depends on your preferences and, of course, financial capabilities.

Five-star hotels in St. Julian's - The Westin Dragonara Resort, Radisson Blu Resort, InterContinental Malta - await tourists in luxurious rooms. Payment per day will be about 250 €.

The George, St. has one less star. George's Park & La Vallette Resort, Golden Tulip Vivaldi Hotel. The quality and comfort of these hotels are slightly inferior to five-star ones, but the price for a room varies within 200 €. Young people prefer to stay in guest houses, three-star hotels, hostels. A room for two will cost in this case, 20-60 €.

Let's think about leisure time

St Julian's is popular with holidaymakers for its vibrant nightlife. The area is a center of entertainment, as entertainment venues can be found everywhere. Moreover, the nightlife is varied and will impress not only young people, but also the older generation. Fans of gambling will be pleasantly surprised by the numerous casinos equipped with slot machines, poker and roulette tables. Divers will also enjoy an exciting dive near the Mercanti Reef, famous for its countless crevices.

Shopping in St Julian's will be a lot of fun, as the city has a lot of large shops and small markets. You can buy absolutely everything: clothes, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, wine and much more. ATMs and pharmacies are located nearby.

How to get there?

You can get to St. Julian's from different parts of the island by using or renting a suitable car.

Safety

The city is quite safe for tourists. But still, do not walk alone in the dark, do not take large sums of money or original documents with you. By following basic safety rules, you will protect yourself and your property from attack.
